  • The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday, April 1, 1993 Features Volume 58 Number 24 Pick of the Flicks Terrorism, relationships mix in The Crying Dan Warlic Film Critic Two types of people live in today's world. There are givers and there are takers. Neither can alter their behavior, it is their nature. Basically, this is the underlying theme of Neil Jordan's The Crying Game. Nominated for six Academy awards, The Crying Game is a low-budget Irish film of terrorism and personal relationships. Three of its nominations were for best picture, best actor and best supporting actor. All three are positive attributes which were edged out of the coveted awards by equally deserving films. Hollywood producers wouldn't touch The Crying Game College activism College Press Service And you thought the 1960' s were the heyday of protesting for college students. But, in fact, more than 40 percent of college freshmen surveyed by a University of California, Los Angeles research group said that they participated in an organized demonstration last year, as opposed to just 16.3 percent of freshmen polled by the same organization in 1967. The survey, sponsored by the American Council on Education, polled more than 200,000 entering freshmen at 404 colleges and universities. Community activism proved to be of all-around central significance to those polled last year. About one-third (30.7 percent) said that becoming a community leader was a "very important" or an "essential" goal. In 1972, that figure was only 14.9 percent. The heated political debates of the last year took their poll on the Class of '96 as well. The percentage who labeled their political views as either "liberal" or "far left" jumped to 26.7 percent, its highest point in 15 years. The "conservative" or "far right" held constant at 20.3 percent. with a competitor's contract. Sexual ambiguity and a controversial plot twist raised too much concern. Producers did not want to take a risk with a film of this nature. The Crying Game director, Neil Jordan, managed to acquire a low-budget for production. It was initially released in a few strategic markets. Hollywood finally noticed the film as box office sales skyrocketed. Naturally, they tried to remove some egg from their faces by helping The Crying Game increase it distribution range. In this film, Forest Whitaker (GoodMorning Vietnam) plays Jody, a British soldier kidnapped by the Irish Republican Army. Guarded by Fergus (best actor nominee Stephen Real), a disillusioned activist, Jody attempts to gain freedom through friendship. He shares his innermost feelings and interests with Fergus, whose judgement is quickly clouded. He identifies with Jody as an individual instead of apolitical pawn and also becomes infatuated with Jody's lover, Dil. All I can say for Dil is she has a nice complexion, great thighs, but, Holy Cow, what a surprise! Jaye Davidson (Dil) received an Oscar nomination for her best supporting role. She presents a stunning performance. Dil (Davidson) is the key to one of the most risky, provocative plot twists in recent film history. Dil and Fergus grow increasingly fond of each other. Then, director Neil Jordan introduces a plot resembling Broadway hit M. Butterfly. This risky love affair influences both characters. Their devotion is tested during the remainder of this film. The Crying Game deserves four out of five stars for acting, photography, and delivery. Forest Whitaker, Stephen Rea and Jaye Davidson's present stunning performances worthy of the Oscar nomination Rea and Davidson received. The photography crew captured emotions with a crafty use of cameraangles. Cameraangles downward on a kidnapped Whitaker rep resent the sense of entrapment and despair. On Whitaker's desperate flight for freedom, camera angles are low or level representing power or equality. Many other scenes are influenced by skilled camera crews. I enjoyed The Crying Game very much. It is not the best film I've seen lately, though. It's nature and underlying theme may be distasteful, even repulsive, to some viewers. The overall plot is fairly weak, although it twists into an attention- holding direction. I feel it deserved all six Oscar nominations, yet I also understand how the competition edged it out.
