Even in this role he managed to average close to ten points per game, but there was always the starting role to look forward to. The opportunity came when the Cats traveled to Spindale to play in the annual holiday tournament there. Gilbert started both games in the Spin- dale tournament and scored 17 and 10 points respectively. Against Carson - Newman Jack led the rally in the second half that brought the Cats so close, only to fall at the hands of the Eagles, 74-65. Since obtaining the starting role, Gilbert has upped his average to eleven points per game, third highest on the squad. Jack did an excellent job as a reserve, but his starting roles look like he wants to stay off the bench. Cats Receive Two Defeats In Tourney The Guilford Quakers and the North Carolina A & T Aggies lowered the boom on the Catamounts in the Gate City Holiday tournament held in Greensboro. The two Greensboro colleges entertained the Cats and the Elon Christians, with each one playing the two outsiders. Guilford employed fantastic shooting in the opening game to pull away from the Cats, 90-71, and A & T came back the next night with a balanced attack to shade the Catamounts, 86-79. In the Guilford game, Bob Kauffman fired in 30 points to put the finishing touches on the Western five. Henry Logan, the Cats' high-scoring guard was limited to only 14 tallies. Charlie McConnell's 28 points paced the Cats. Against the Aggies, Logan, McConnell, and John Bloom carried the individual scoring for the Cats with 15, 14 and 13 points respectively, but this was not enough to overcome the winners. Jack Gilbert C-N Spoils Late Rally, Wins 74-65 The Eagles of Carson-Newman built a 12-point halftime lead and held off a late Catamount rally to defeat the Cats, 74-65 in Jefferson City Monday night. Paced by Jack Gilbert and Henry Logan, the Cats pawed away at the Carson-Newman lead starting with 10 minutes to go in the game, but fell short, mainly because of foul trouble to Logan, John Brintnall. and Bob Thompson. Jerry Cannon led all scorers with 20 points as the Eagles built an early eight point lead, and then captalized on cold shooting from the Cats to take a 38-26 halftime lead. With less than 10 minutes to play, Jack Gilbert pulled the Cats to within three, 48-45, but timely fouls down the stretch and red-hot foul-shooting by the Eagles were too much for the Cats to overcome. Logan led the Cats in scoring with 18 points, and was followed closely by Gilbert with 15 and Charlie McConnell with 13. Greg Whitman led both teams in rebounding, grabbing eleven. Team shooting was about equal with Carson-Newman hitting 41 per cent, while the Cats hit 40. This was far below their phenominal 54.1 shooting percentage the Cats have enjoyed thus far. The victory gave the Eagles a 7-3 mark and brought the Catamounts to 8-3. Of the three defeats, only one has occurred in the Conference. The Cats ran away from Campbell College in the December 31 opener, and then held off a late Wofford rally to defeat the Terriers 94-93 on New Year's Day. The two victories moved the Cats' record to 8-2 for all games, but left them 1-1 in conference play. Henry Logan regained his old form after two letdowns in Greensboro, and was voted the tournaments most valuable player. The game with Campbell was Western all the way. The Cats built an early lead and then coasted to victory. Logan's 31 points led the individual scoring for both teams. Against Wofford it was a different story. The outcome I was not settled until the last I bounding. thirty seconds, and the lead changed hands 26 times during the game. Again Logan led the Catamount scoring, this time with 28 tallies. With approximately three minutes remaining in the game, Western trailed Wofford by three points. Logan then went to work and scored eight straight points while forging the Cats into a 94-91 lead. Buddy Hayes, the games high scorer with 30 points, cut the margin to one with 41 seconds remaining. After a missed foul by Logan, Wofford had the ball with 30 seconds remaining but three successive blocked shots by Logan and Herb Moore put the fire out. Logan, while gaining the Most Valuable Player award, scored 59 points and played an excellent floor game.
