  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 26, 1979 sports Spring sports winding down Baseball Cats defeat VMI by STEVE SURLES Sports Editor The WCU baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak Monday afternoon with a 7-3 win over Virginia Military in Lexington, Virginia in the first game of a Southern Conference doubleheader. The second game was called after four innings due to bad weather with the Cats ahead 9-1. Freshman Jeff Mashburn turned in a complete game pitching performance to go with clutch hitting from Billy Boyd and Willie Carpenter to lead the Western win. Mashburn, who recorded his second win against no losses this season, gave up two earned runs while allowing seven hits and no walks. The Cats won the game on a two-run double by Boyd in the fifth to make the score 4-3, and added three more runs in the sixth to seal the victory. The rainout in the second game was the third time this season the Cats have lost a potential win to the weather. The VMI game came after a disappointing weekend for the club. On Thursday, freshman starter Randy Sims was knocked out of the box after retiring only one batter in the first inning as ETSU routed Western 17-3. Saturday, the Cats lost a doubleheader to Marshall University in Huntington, WVa., by scores of 3-1, and 15-4. In the first game ace Rick Adair lost a heartbreaker on a homerun by Harry Severino with two out in the seventh. Leading 1-0 going into the final Greek Beat frame, Adair quickly got two outs but then gave up an error and hit a batter to set up Severino's blast, his first of the year. Adair, 6-3 with the loss, still ranks as one of the top pitchers in the conference with a 1.59 era. The second game was a complete rout as Marshall stung WCU pitchers for 12 hits and 15 runs. Earlier in the week WCU lost the second game of a doubleheader to Davidson to drop them out of contention for the conference championship. The Citadel, with a sweep of a doubleheader against ETSU 3-1, 1-0, took the Conference championship and a 13-2 record in league play. The Bulldogs will receive an automatic bid into the Atlantic Regionals to be held in early May. The men's tennis team ended their regular season Monday with a 8-1 loss to Carson-Newnan. The highlight of the day for the Catamounts was number one seed Mark Craig's defeat of nationally ranked Rick Yoerg 6-4, 6-4. The victory by Craig in the season finale capped a fine year for him. The rest of the matches were close with Chuck Gill of C-N defeating Eddie Thomas 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Brad Harmon winning over Kenny Steen 6-4, 6-2. The Cats closed out their regular season 10-12, as the Southern Conference Tournament began Wednesday at UT-Chatanooga. The track and field team continued to have some problems as they dropped a dual meet with Appalachian State Saturday in Cullowhee. Monday the golfers dropped a match in Maggie Valley as Appalachian State rolled over the Cats and VMI 366 to 387. The Mountaineers put together a good round of golf on the Catamount home course with Kirk Shelton leading their scores with a 3 under par 68. Jeb Burton of VMI was the medalist, finishing the 18 holes with a 4 under 67. Western's John Bud wine lead their team with a two over 73.
