  • APKIL$,.197.9/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN. P#ge 15 Leftwich retires after 28 years of service in industrial education Friday dinner honored professor Dr. Rodney L. Leftwich, WCU professor of industrial education and technology who served the university as a division and department head for 28 years, was guest of honor Friday night at a dinner marking his retirement from university service. Leftwich's friends and colleagues from WCU attended the dinner, held at the Court Hill Inn in Sylva. Leftwich joined the faculty of what was then Western Carolina Teachers College in 1947 as head of the Division of Fine and Industrial Arts, which included art education, home economics, industrial arts, music and writing. In 1952 Leftwich completed his doctorate at Bradley University and was named head of the new Department of Fine and Industrial Arts, which excluded music and writing. When WCU attained university status in 1968, Leftwich became head of the newly created Department of Industrial Education and technology, a position he held until he returned to full-time teaching in 1975. He thus presided over the department that formed the 00N of WCU's School of technology and Applied Science. created in 1976 by grouping the departments, of home economics and industrial education and techno! Leftwich holds bachelor's and master's degrees from tieorge Peabody College for Teachers, and his doctoral dissertation at Bradley University reflects his longstanding interest in the Cherokee arts and crafts In 1971 leftwich reaffirmed that interest by publishing a full-length book, "Arts and Crafts of the Cherokee." The book was presented the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award for 1971 from the North Carolina Historical Association as the best book related to the Appalachian area published that year. Produced from 24 years of close association with the I astern Band of the Cherokee Indians on the Oualla Reservation, the book was later chosen by the North Carolina library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped to be reproduced in Braille and on tape. Leftw ich is a life member of the North Carolina Industrial Arts Association, which awarded him a 25-year service plaque. He is a former member and formal president both ot the lions Club and the Parent teacher Association, and served as president of the Town-College Club in 1962. Leftwich also is a member or former member of the National Fducation Association, the American Industrial Arts Association, and the academic honor societies Kappa Phi Kappa and Fpsilon Phi Tau.
