(AP)—The Air Force dispatched a truck Tuesdaj lo spray loam on the smoldering remains ot a fire at a farm-chemical warehouse, while state officials began monitoring creeks in the area to determine the extent of contamination. All but about 25 Pitt County residents were allowed to return to their homes today. More than 1,000 residents were evacuated from their homes on Monday when the fire broke out. The foam truck from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base at Goldsboro was used to try to reduce the amount of water used on the fire. Water contaminated with toxic chemicals ran off into nearby creeks and threatened to pollute the Neuse River. The fire was brought under control after it burned for about six hours Monday morning, but firefighters continued to pour water on the smoking remains throughout the night. By late Monday, about 200 persons were allowed tc return to their homes, but a spokesman for the Pitt County Sheriff's Department said several hundred others stayed in shelters in area schools Overnight. Officials were concerned about the runoff of thousands of gallons of water that were poured onto a variety Of pesticides, herbicides and other farm chemicals Stored in the warehouse, lime was dumped into the creeks to absorb the chemicals. Health officials have determined that smoke from the fire does not present a threat. The public water supply has not been contaminated, but health officials said homeowners using private wells should have their water supplies checked. Authorities said the fire, which was reported about 4 a.m., raged out of control for nearly six hours. Six fire fighters were treated for smoke inhalation. Initial estimates of damage to the warehouse were put at $2 million. The cause of the fire had not been determined. Residents were warned of potentially lethal fumes from pesticides stored at the Coastal Chemical Corporation as they plowed through snow several niches deep to reach the schools. Some of those evacuated lived as far as 20 miles from the company on the outskirts of the eastern North Carolina city. Water poured on the fire began running off into nearby creeks, and earthen dams were hastily constructed to divert the flow before it reached the Neuse River. Also at the fire were pesticide specialists from the Division of Health Services of the Department of Human Resources, said Dr. J.N. MacCormack of the division. Several 55-gallon drums of chemicals exploded in the intense heat, and the smoke could be seen as far as 20 miles away.
