Western pulls off upset over rival Apps by STEVE SURLES Sports Editor Western Carolina pulled off one of the great) si comeback victories in the school's basketball history with a stunning 50-49 upset over ASU Monday night in Boone. The contest was decided by a follow up shot by freshman Greg Dennis at the buzzer—in what was one of the wildest finishes in the Southern Conference this year. WCU erased a five point lead with just 29 seconds on the clock. The last half minute of the game could well have come directly from an absurdist comedy, however, as the game got hard to^inderstand. At the 29 second mark, ASU ahead 47-44. Larry Caldwell was called for a foul—an odd "False double foul" that gave ASU's Walt Anderson two shots and a jump ball at midcourt. The Cats controlled the tap with Dennis laying in his first field goal of the game with 20 seconds left, making the score 49-46 ASU. The Cats got a clutch steal off their full-court press with Kevin Young hitting a 15 footer to close the gap to one. In the meantime the clock at Varsity Gym ran all the way down as WCU called a time-out with nine seconds officially remaining. After some confusion seven seconds were put back on the clock. On the inbounds Caldwell fouled Renaldo Lawrence, having six ticks on the clock and ASU in a critical one and one situtation. Lawrence missed with WCU snaring the rebound and Kevin Young putting up a 35 foot shot as time ran out. Dennis followed the attempt by Young for the winning points. Confusion reigned for several moments as ASU Coach Bobby Cremins heatedly contested the call. Referee Ed Chambers ruled the shot a continuation of the play and the basket good. WCU had forged to a 24-21 halftime lead, but had fallen behind 28-26 with 17:24 to play. The Cats trailed by seven points (46-39) with 1:31 left in the game and ASU in their spread offense. Hampering the Catamount effort was their miserable 6-23 shooting from the foul line, yet they hit three of four in the last 35 seconds of the game. From the floor Western shot 22-45, for just under 50 percent. The Apps shot only 40 percent on 16-40 and were 17-23 from the line. Larry Caldwell led the scoring for WCU with 13 points, with Ray Person and Eric Taylor adding 10 each. ASU was led by Walt Anderson's 15 points. 6'8" center Mel Hubbard was held to just three points and no field goals by the tough WCU inside defense. To add to the incredible nature of WCU's upset over ASU was the Thursday night 67-61 bombshell Cottrell's Cats gave conference power Furman in Greenville, S.C. It was also a comeback win for the young Catamounts as they trailed 39-32 at the half and by 11 points early in the second half. Using a stingy 2-3 zone defense and a patient offense the Cats whittled the Furman lead away with 8:06 left in the game on Ray Person's three point play. Person, on a WCU fast break made it 63-61 Western with 1:28 to play, a lead the Cats held on to for good. Furman missed the front end of three one and ones down the stretch. Eric Taylor and Larry Caldwell added clutch free-throws to ensure the upset. Ray Person led the Cats with 15 points and great all-around play. Caldwell added 12 points, Taylor 11, and Kevin Young 10 along with Terry Rutherford's 14 rebounds to lead the Catamount heroics. Sandwiched in between the monumental upsets was Saturday's 69-54 loss to Marshall in Reid Gym. Physically drained, the Cats played a tough gutsy game but simply could not buy a basket. Person played a great game before fouling out. giving the Cats the bulk of their offense with 22 points. Freshman George Washington led the Thundering Herd with 21.
