  • PAGE 14/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/AUGUST 31,1978 LCE to present wide range of programs 'A potpouri of entertainment A potpourri of entertainment, ranging from folk song to photography, from Beethoven to ballet, and from blown glass to opera is scheduled during the 1978-79 subscription series of the Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Committee at WCU. The series included 22 seperate programs covering a broad spectrum of the arts. Included are performances by the Charlotte and Ashevill symphonies, the Atlanta Ballet and the Nancy Hauser Dance Company, the Paul Winter Consort, the National Opera Company, and numerous chamber music groups. The program will have its lighter moments, too, provided by Dimitri, a classic clown and mime; the amazing Kreskin, a mentalist; and Professor Peter Schickele, the "discoverer" of P.D.Q. Bach. And the \ 'sual arts will be well represented, with exhibitions of photography, drawing, fibers, blown glass, and collage, sculpture and lithography. The season will open with back-to-back performances by Jean Ritchie and the Charlotte Symphony. Miss Ritchie will perform Appalachian folk music- September 20. A native of Viper, Kentucky, in the Cumberland Mountains, she has been a regular on the American folk music scene since publishing her first book in 1955. Since then she has produced many books and records. The Charlotte Symphony, with pianist Malcolm Frager, will perform September 21. Frager is a favorite at major music festivals, and is the only artist to have won both the Leventritt and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium competitions. The Nancy Houser Dance Company, a professional modern dance troupe based at the Guild of Performing Arts in Minneapolis, will be featured November 1, and the Atlanta Ballet will perform a traditional program February 14 and a special children's matinee February 15. The musical spoof, "The Intimate P.D.Q. Bach," will be featured February 7, and on March 1 the National Opera Company will present Puccini's opera, "La Boheme." The season finale will be a performance April 22 of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, with the Asheville Symphony and a grand chorus, conducted by Robert Welch. Prices are $15 for a single adult, $25 for an adult couple, $35 for a family (two adults, two children), $50 for a patron (four adults), and $8 for WCU special or graduate students and student spouses, non-WCU students, and children.
