  • JUNE 22. 1978/THE WESTERN CAROL INI AN /f AOE S Pla L review: 'Belle of Amherst' worth seeing 'Tonya Lamm shines radiantly* by TONY BROWN Contributing Writer You ssill base missed something special if you don't catch the last Unisersits Players performance of "The Belle of Amherst" tonight at 8 in the < ullowhee Little Theater. Tonya Lamm shines radiantly as Emily Dickinson—this play's onls character. Her job would have been admirable simply for having remembered all the lines of this 90-miniite monologue, but she does more than that. She brings the ll>th century poet and recluse to life. 1 at lust suspected the pace of the show was a bit too last for an old and w ithering New England hermit—she ssas a bit to spry and talkative for a woman so pale and skinny—but then I considered the words of her poetry, the energy and "comph" of her verses, and midway into the first act 1 ssas convinced it was Emily herself on the stage reading me her jewels of rhyme and alliteration. Playwright William Luce deserves as much credit as Ms. I a in m. director Kathleen Sanquist and everybody else who contributed to this masterpiece of the Cullosshee stage. luce captures Miss Dickinson's character bs piecing together snatches of her poetry and journals. Ms Lamm's acting job svas perfect (well, almost), from reading the poetry without sounding sing-song to reacting and interacting ssith "invisible" characters. I could almost see the people she ssas talking to ssho weren't there. Although onls one player svas required on the Stage, this plav wouldn't have come off without the ssork of a lot of off-stage personnel. Jeff Clark helped Ms. Sandqtiist direct the plav and designed the set. John Martin designed and executed the lighting. Eddie Nunn ran the sound effects. Alex Norris did the makeup and Mary Coppage designed the costumes. Again, go see this play. 1 think you'll be delightfully surprised. I was. c Q to UJ o c WCU netter schedule set A 12-game Southern Conference slate and games with Georgia Tech. Clemson and South Carolina highlight Western's 1978-79 basketball schedule announced by head coach Steve Cottrell. The Catamounts, third-year members of NCAA Division I and entering their second year in the Southern, will meet 18 different teams on a 27-game schedule that opens Nov. 28. "It will be a demanding schedule," said Cottrell. "The conference was highly competitive last season and it appears to be even stronger and more of a dogfight this year. Plus, we've added Georgia Tech, Clemson and South Carolina.. Realistically, these may be teams we don't have any business playing at this point in our development, but they are the type- of quality competition we want to play." Western will split its 26 regular season games evenlv, playing 13 on the road and 13 at home. The 27th g?.me will be the first round game of the Southern Conference Tournament on Feb. 24. Heading the home schedule are first time meetings in Reid Gym with Georgia Tech, Furman and Davidson in addition to games with Appalachian State, UT-Chattanooga, Marshall, East Tennessee State and The Citadel. WCU will face tough road games at Clemson, VMI, Georgia Tech and South Carolina in its first-time guest appearances. Cottrell has also entered his team in Western Carolina's first holiday tournament in several seasons. WCU will round out a four-team field in the Citrus Invitational in Lakeland. Fla.. on Dec. 8-9. St. Peters, Mercer and host Florida Southern are the other three teams involved. "We'll be playing teams from seven southeastern states and that should give us a good indication of how sve stack up in this region. We are looking for more success than last year's 7-19 record, but we are not expecting a complete turnaround. Our fine recruiting year was directed toward a firm foundation. We feel things are going in the right direction. Our goal next season will be to make some of our progress show up on the scoreboard," Cottrell said. Western's conference schedule will send the Cats against Appalachian State, The Citadel, UT-Chattanooga, Marshall and Furman, twice; and Davidson and VMI. once. O'Toole finally awarded tenure Thomas E. O'Toole, associate professor of history at WCU, has been awarded tenure by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. The tenure, which will go into effect September 1, was approved by the Board of Governors last Friday. He returned to WCU in 1975. O'Toole is-presently in Africa on a Fullbright-Hays group project grant for a Faculty Development Seminar in Modernization Theory with a Focus on Francophone West Africa. Part of his Fullbright-Hays grant to Africa included a senior lectureship at the Univeristy of Zaire. O'Toole received his D.A. degree from Carnegie- Mellon University in 1976 and his C.Ph. degree in 1972 and his M.A. degree in 1976 from the University of Minnesota. Other accomplishments include 19 articles and reviews in various scholarly journals and publications and service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guinea, West Africa from 1963 to 1965.
