First released in 1959, it quickly became the most celebrated film of the decade in Germany, and having gained an international audience during the sixties was acclaimed one of the best post-war films Germany has yet produced. Wicki achieves through cinematic sharpness and concentrated emotional drives, a portrait of war that is at once reflective and horridly realistic. The film effectively explores the contrast of misguided youthful idealism with a grimmer reality a la Crane and Vonnegut, and is in fact based on a factual novel by Manfred Gregor. In almost documentary fashion the film tells the story of seven teenage boys who live in a small German town during the waning days of World War 11. As the film progresses we discover the boys to be a fairly close knit group, and through a series of episodes we witness the youngsters experiencing the personal traumas of adolesence. The sets the stage for their coming ordeal. The boys all possess an enthusiastic attitude towards the war which in their minds is the best way to. prove their manhood to each other and to themselves. Upon receiving induction notices, the youngsters respond joyously and look forward to the time when they can defend the fatherland. Their eagerness to serve is dam. pened somewhat by the rigorous but boring basic training they must experience before going into the field. After only one day of training then- squadron is mobilized because of an Allied breakthrough. Ironically the boys, due to their youth and inexperience, are ordered to protect a bridge on the outskirts of their hometown. The bridge, to the rear of the battle line, was to be demolished later that day so advancing enemy forces could not use it. Thus it should have been a relatively safe position for the boys to guard; however, the Sgt. in charge is killed without letting the young soldiers know the nature of their orders. Guided now by only their idealism the boys deceive themsleves into thinking they have something to protect. In the scenes that follow the viewer watches as this idealism is carried to its extreme in the senseless defence of the bridge, with the attendant results of death and dehumanization. Wicki has been criticized for exercising such graphic realism in the absence of any poetic grasp that would have transcended the horror of what he was presenting. However, this lack of poetics does not deter from the emotional impact of the film nor does it make the film any less The Bridge will be shown tonight at 7:30 in Forsyth Auditorium.
