  • PAGE 20/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 6, 1978 Choose wisely Dear Editor, Once again, the students at Western are being given the opportunity to choose their student leaders; hopefully, they will choose wisely. In order to do this, the field of candidates should be studied, their qualifications examined, and their abilities compared. 1 have done this and must say the field of SGA presidential candidates has been sharply cut to one—Wanda Nelson. This candidate's qualifications speak for themselves: three years as student senator; past presidential assistant; presently senate president pro tempore; Chairperson of the rules committee; and member of numerous other committees. Any student who is responsible enough to go the polls and vote should want in return responsible leadership. Responsibility in leadership in our student government is nurtured by experience. A vote for Wanda Nelson is a vote for that responsible and mature leadership that all students at Western deserve. The choice belongs to each and every students—choose well, I have. Cindy Morton Richard Sullins Voice of students Dear Editor, "Let the students be the voice of student government." This is a statement or promise we have all heard from candidates since we enrolled at WCU. It is a great thought, and would even be a major accomplishment if any candidate ever implemented such a simple plan. However, most SGA presidents find this is no simple task, and few, if any have involved themselves with students once the election is over. Once elected, the SGA president usually hides within the safe confines of his own office and surrounds himself with friends who constantly remind him of the great job he is doing. "Troublemakers," those students who constantly point out problems with SGA, are ignored. This is the easiest way to rid yourself of criticism—just ignore it. Is this year any different? Can any one of the candidates in this year's election step forth and honor a campaign promise to be the voice of the students? Dunkin Fitzsimons. in my opinion, is the candidate who has the necessary characteristics and qualifications to fulfill this annual promise. Anybody can study the technical aspects of SGA, but it takes a strong individual who will listen to criticism of his own administration and then take measures to correct the problems, even at the risk of making friends angry. This in itself would be a major accomplishment, but the most admirable characteristics that Dunkin demonstrates are the ability to get along with people, and his willingness to mingle with the students and not hide behind the desk of an office. This cannot be taught or studied—it has to be natural. This characteristic must be the most important aspect to be considered when selecting a SGA president and Dunkin FitzSimons is unsurpassed in this area. Let the students be the voice of our SGA. This can be best accomplished by voting for Dunkin FitzSimons, SGA president in the upcoming presidential election. Thank you. Mike Wade 'Them changes' Dear Editor, As a long established member of the student body of WCU (6 yrs.) I've seen many changes in the physical characteristics of WCU that have made this a better academic institution; but. there are people who are here in search of a social life, as well as education—the college dorm student. In my VA years of dorm life and as of late my one vear of commuter life. I have found WCU a stagnant TVfc06^4x5u*»WnAT 6MAl*v T(WAsW-/ TgWjS^ AMP -pbrAfbUSltV pool as far as the dorm student is concerned. I have met many a professor and administrator that ask through polls and lecture, "Why is WCU a suitcase college?" The answer most given is "let's build something big and beautiful, and maybe that will work to keep students around!" As we can see by the chaotic movement of traffic leaving Cullowhee every Friday on their way home, the administrators have failed. But what of the voice of the students, SGA? What have they done in the past few years? As an ex-senator from Albrigh-Benton, I've seen many supposed great debates: the budget, the disappearance of funds, changes in senate rules, adding new positions to SGA, and more...Ha. Ha. They're all picky-anty issues that are usually nothing more than flair ups between dynamic personalities. Few times, if eve!, are issues such as dorm students' rights and needs addressed in the Senate. But there is someone new on the scene. I finally see some new blood and an end to the stagnant conditions in sight for Student Government. I see it in the person of Phillip Cates, candidate for SGA vice-president. He's proved this year to be intelligent, hardworking, and most importantly, out for the needs and wants of the average student. For those of you who know me, you know I tell it straight, sometimes too straight; but, I do fully endorse Phil Cates for SGA vice-president. He's out to do his best for all of us. Don't forget him on election day. Doug Story We goofed Editor, My letter of March 23 about your editorial of March 16 had a gross error in it due to editorial mismanagement. The sentence which read "Obviously you have failed to consult today's unemployment figures, which prove that white males are still the lowest on the totem pole," should have read, "obviously you have failed to consult today's unemployment figures which prove that white males are the most employed people in America. Women and blacks are still the lowest on the totem pole." Oh, for some simple faith. Please hire some proofreaders. Lynda Morgan Something lacking Dear Editor, As most students are aware, I am running for Editor of the Western Carolinian. I decided to run only after a great deal of hesitation, for this year's paper has seen fine leadership under its present administration. But several important journalistic features are missing from the Carolinian. I believe the Carolinian has a far more important responsibility than just reporting straight news. Any self-respecting newspaper has a strong editorial format. By this I mean the Carolinian should not only report factual happenings, but should also extensively use the editorial page to interpret the news. This is no easy job, for confronting school administrators, SGA officials, and others takes a great deal of courage, and most importantly—experience. During my eight years working every imaginable position on both weekly and bi-weekly papers, I have gained the experience needed to make the Carolinian into the real "Voice of the Students." Trust me with your paper and you will not regret it. Respectfully yours, Mark S. Wilkins Support Deitz Dear Editor, As present business manager of the Catamount yearbook, I fully support Danny Deitz for the office of business manager for next year. Danny has the time, devotion, sense of responsibility, and knowledge necessary to perform all of the duties that will be required of him in this position, and is quite serious about helping the Catamount grow and prosper. As a business major, Danny is familiar with all of the paperwork and bookkeeping tasks that he will be responsible for, and as a close associate of mine, has already been advised on how to deal with all situations that exist. No past affiliation with the Catamount is required for this position and I feel certain that a man with Danny's talents and personality will be able to cooperate with the editor and staff and keep the office well coordinated. For the above reasons. I fully support, and urge you to vote for Danny Deitz for business manager of the Catamount in next Tuesday's elections. With Danny in office, the transition of officers will be less complicated and the Catamount will continue to operate at a high level of efficiency.
