  • MARCH 23, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 13 Niggli receives plaudits at play WCU's first lady of the theater was honored Saturdav night, climaxing a six-day run of "The Royal Family," the first annual Josefina Niggli Theater Production. At an on-stage ceremony in the Little Theater at WCU, Miss Niggli received the plaudits of friends, former students, and fellow theater people. A 1977 WCU graduate in speech and theater arts, Jessica Phelps, read a tribute written by Douglas Reed recognizing Miss Niggli's contribution to the WCU theater program, which she served from 1956 until her retirement in 1976. Dr. H. F. Robinson, WCU chancellor, presented Miss Niggli with an album filled with congratulatory litters from well-wishers who could not be present, and Dr. James E. Dooley, vice chancellor for development and special services, announced plans for establishing a Josefina Niggli fund to bring leading actors, dramatists and directors to the campus and to award theater scholarships. The ceremony marked the end of a series of tributes to Miss Niggli. Following a luncheon in her honor Saturday, Tom Patterson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill addressed theatergoers on the rewards of college and university theater. Miss Niggli came to WCU to teach after a distinguished career as playwright, novelist, and poet. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, to American parents, Miss Niggli twice had to flee to the United States during Mexican revolutions. She won prizes in the National Catholic College Poetry Contest and the Ladies Home Journal College Short Story Contest. She also became active in writing for the theater, and found her way to Chapel Hill, where she worked with Samuel Selden and Frederick Koch. She was awarded a master's degree in drama in 1937. There followed writing careers with Twentieth Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn Meyer in California and teaching positions in Britain and the U.S. Miss Niggli has published numerous one-act plays, a novel, a collection of short stories, and textbooks. "Mexican Village," a book of stories published in 1945, won rave reviews.
