  • Page 10/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 2, 1978 Erratic happenings occur in Madison game Awkward start for WCU Early indications showed this game would be one of erratic happenings. Since the snow and cold held down the usually filled Reid gym, one of Western's main advantages was already eliminated. The introduction ceremony and technical difficulties with the lighting system also made Western's appearance awkward. lames Madison University, Western's opponent, was a good team, with two All-American candidates and i respectable record to show. The Cats also had further difficulty by the one-game suspension of starter Terry Rutherford imposed by Coach Cottrell for missing a trip to an awav game. Freshman Clarence DesBordes from Washington. D.C. replaced Rutherford and added a lot of hustle and enthusiasm. The game started for Western as cold as the sub-zero temperatures outside. Poor shot selection along with good defense produced little offensive efficiency for the Cats. Led by All-American candidate Sherman Dillard, the Dukes raced out to a seven point lead. Their hot shooting was finally subdued midway through the first half. Early baskets by Larry Calwell. Jimmy McCallister and Bubba Wilson kepi pace with the Dukes. Both teams then went into spells of ineffectiveness. I he bonus situation went into effect for both teams late in the half although neither team really took control or advantage. With good defense the Cats kept it close, they applied a box-in-one situation on Dillard. Finally, with 2:44 left in the half, Larry Caldwell stole a pass in the middle and went the distance of the court to put the Cats ahead for ihe first time. 28-27. About a minute later Bubba Wilson's slam dunk widened the Cats' lead to three al 30-27. their biggest lead of the game. The Cats held the ball for ihe last shot of the half but failed to convert. The start of the second half produced the same results as the first. The Dukes spurted out to a five point lead with 17 minutes remaining. Western's cold shooting enabled Madison to widen their lead. The Cats' Jimmy McCallister left the game with his fourth foul at the 14 minute mark. The Cats then started another come back and regained the lead at the 7:45 mark on a jump shot by Rickv Head. After a slow first half. Head came on in the second half to score 10 points and play an aggressive board game. The game then went back and forth and both teams had numerous chances to put it away. The Dukes' Dillard showed why he is an Ail-American with two long jumpers and converted on a 1-1 situation to give Madison the lead at 61-60. Bubba Wilson came back and hit a jump-shot to knot the score at 63. The Dukes held for a last shot and with five seconds left the Dukes' Roger Huctt drove down the middle and converted a layup to give the Dukes the game at 65-63. Bubba Wilson's desperation 25 footer at the buzzer rimmed out, although one official had called a violation anvwav. This game is one Coach Cottrell knows slipped awav from his Cats and these are the kind in the near future in which the verdict will hopefully be changed.
