  • PAGE 67 THE WESTERN CAROLINI AN /MARCH*, 1978 Football recruits total 24 WCU brought its football recruit total to 24 this week with the announcement that six more prep players had signed with the Catamounts, including 6-6. 222-pound, light end Bryan Boll of Shelby High. Joining Boll in the latesi group are (lav Billiard of Atlanta; Kevin Cowan of Eau Gallie, Fla.; Zavier I on ill of Shelby; Steve Davis of Belmont; and Kod Carter of Daytona Beach. Fla. Boll plaved lor Coach Jim Taylor, a WCU alumnus. on Shelby's 10-0 (regular season) team in the tough Southwest 3-A Conference and was highly recruited. "We are extremely proud to sign a player of Bryan's caliber," said head coach Bob Waters. "Hi- has the potential to plav either tight end or defensive end." Bell is the nephew of Bobby Bell of Ihe Kansas City Chiefs in the NF1. and a cousin to Mel Phillips of the San Francisco 49ers. "We're impressed with Bryan's potential to become a premier college player." says WCU assistant coach Don Powers. "He has gn'at si/o and great speed. He is young physically, with growth and athletic develop- WCU bringing in the manpower inent still very much ahead of him." I.-i-rill, 6-0. 193. was a teammate of Bell and is a linebacker prospect for the Catamounts. Called "a proven winner who plays with determination" by Powers, lerrill is president of the student body at Shelby and is highly valued for his leadership potential. Bullard plaved for North Springs High's 10-1 regional championship team and has boon selected to plav in the North South All-Star game next summer. He vvas North Springs' mosl valuable lineman both on offense and defense and is slated for middle guard work with Western. Bullard is 6-0, 220 pounds. Both Cowart and Davis are defensive back prospects. Cow art plaved at Fan Gallie High in Florida's highly respected Space Coast Conference. At 5-11, 185. Cowart is noted for his "absolute reckless abandon" style of play. "He has the speed and quickness of a back and the hitting ability of a linebacker," says Powers. "Steve has tremendous acceleration and runs well," said Waters. Carter, a 5-8, 160-pound, wide receiver was recruited by WCU assistant Don Dalton. "Rod played tailback his junior year and quarterback his senior year," Dalton said. "He has good quickness and fine hands." Although he had other offers, he said he wanted to become a Catamount on our first contact with him." Carter posted a 9.8 hundred in track and Waters says •'he fits the mold of a Western Carolina receiver." WCU signees Bell, Tim Hassard and Dwayne Norman have been named to play in the annual North Carolina East-West All-Star game. Waters said WCU's football recruiting is "virtually completed, with only a few loose ends left to secure." "As a group,.I feel good about this year's signees. It's tough to compare them to previous years, but at this stage and on paper, I can't help but be excited." CPA looks at audits "A CPA Looks at Local Government Audits" will be the title of a financial management briefing to be held Tuesday in Cullowhee and Wednesday in Asheville for representatives of local government units. Both briefings will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 3:30 p.m. The Cullowhee session will be held in the University Center. In Asheville, the briefing will take place in S&W Cafeteria at the Asheville Mall. Lynne Johnson, certified public accountant with the firm of Hansen, Pearson and Associates, P.A., of Hendersonville and Brevard, will present the briefing, which is designed to help smaller units of government prepare for their annual audits. There will be a $3.50 registration fee. The briefings are sponsored by the WCU Center for Improving Mountain Living.
