  • MARCH 2, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 13 Improved play has been evident on Cats From Page S 25 point effort against Marshall January 21, Larry emerged as one of the better players in the conference. He average 9.5 points (14.3 the 'last twelve games) and dished out 169 assists. Tarry emerged as a solid Southern Conference guard." Coach Cottrell said. "He takes coaching so well and he's developing into a leader already. 1 really think he's one of the quality point guards in the conference. He should have a great career. The play of Terry Rutherford and Jimmy McCallister was also encouraging. Terry averaged 10.1 points per game, second best on the club, while grabbing 185 rebounds. McCallister averaged 9.2 a game and led the club yvith a .727 free throw average. "I have got to give a lot of credit to Terry and Jimmy." Cottrell said. "Terry played hurt all season with his knee injuries and will give us solid inside help next year. Jimmy was the clutch player. He yvon two ball games for us with his shots at the buzzer." Along with these contributions came those from Ricky Head who had a .492 field goal percentage. Gar) Plamondon's zone breaking shooting ability, the aggressive defense of Clarence DesBordes, and the reserve contributions of Doug Plemmons, senior Zip Stowe, Harry Dolan, Forrest Callaway, and Kevin Nipper. The biggest individual story of the year however, was that of Bubba Wilson. Wilson had an incomparable year. He was the only proven player on the squad and Cottrell made him the on and off court leader of the club. Bubba responded with a 23.5 scoring mark, third best in the conference, 7.7 rebounds a game, and numerous other timely steals, assists and dunks that kept the Cats in a lot of ball games. Bubba did it all the entire season, and he really came to fire in the last home game against ASU February 15. "I'll tell you," relates Cottrell, "That game was about the most exciting moment I've ever had in basketball. It was great to have that kind of game at home after the tremendous support we had been give all year. The players appreciated that. It was never better thatn that game." That night the Cats entered the big time in college basketball. Ihey took the regular season Southern Conference champions to a 68-54 rout, led by Wilson's 24 points and 14 rebounds. The game proyed that WCU could not only plav with, but beat the Inst. lo continue the giant steps of progress begun this season, the Cals yvill have to recruit well and keep up the hard yyork that characterized this year's club. Coach Cottrell is confident that there yvill be no problems. "We hope lor a Rue recruiting year, being selective. and looking lor talent to blend with our returnees. With what yyc'yc accomplished and effective recruiting, yye feel yye'll help establish an eyen stronger foundation on which to build our program. We'll outwork any staff to improve. Good programs are built with patience and hard yvork and we've got those things." Even though the Cats lost ninleen games, tin- biggest disappointment of the season came Monday at the announcements of the Southern Conference team and QUIN1 March 3-9 "The One and Only" is Funny.
