WESTERN 12 CAROLINIAN SPORTS January 30, 2002 Bowling: The Sport For Every Western Student By Sean Bilichka Staff Writer Sports are great! This issue, I am going to talk about the king of all sports: bowling. There are many theories as to the origin of bowling. Some believe it originated in Antarctica when a penguin slipped, and knocked down ten other penguins. Others think that it began in Italy. They are wrong, and the penguin people are right. I usually review movies, but I am doing this as a favor to Cory. So those of you who think they have the ability to write about sports, come give ol' Corndawg a hand, will ya? It's not like college is hard and you have to study. There is nothing more fun that working into the wee hours in the morning on a paper article, trust me. Back to bowling. I asked a person sitting next to me what they thought about bowling. She said the worst part was that you had to reset your own pins, and the balls are disintegrating. I laughed about the disintegrating ball part, and she stopped talking to me. Hey, you activist people! Here is a worthy cause. Raise some money to fix up our bowling alley. You could have Homer Simpson as your mascot; it would be neato. As for my '_.- personal experiences with bowling, I was enrolled in bowling at the beginning of this semester. In fact, I still have the book for the class. I was all psyched to take the class, then I realized that it was at 8 a.m. and I would never wake up that early. So, like a coward, I dropped the class instead of changing my sleeping habits. But next semester, you can bet your last dollar that I will be in bowling class, in the afternoon. If you have never bowled, give it a Sean try sometime. It isn't hard to learn, but takes a lifetime to master, like Chinese checkers. I think that should be the slogan for bowling. Bowling is a really fun date activity, for those of you tired of the movies and the movies here in Cullowhee. I find that girls are particularly good at bowling. In fact, every girl I have gone bowling with has beaten me horribly. I think it is because they roll it • really slow, and they evoke their feminine magic. Sean, you might say, I would love to bowl, but I fear that I will be no good, and that the shoes will have toe rot germs. Well, let me ease you about the toe rot part. They spray shoes with Lysol after you put your pups in them. On Sports They just look really weird because that is the style, kind of like golf pants. As for becoming a better bowler, here is some advice from our friend the Internet. First off, use a lighter ball. This provides better placement, and more accuracy, like a smart bomb. Pow! If you are a beginner, aim for the arrows on the floor. This is much easier than lining up your shot using the pins. The final tip to become a better bowler is to bowl a lot. Practice makes perfect, or in this case, a good bowler. On campus, we have our own bowling alley. The best part about it is that you get to set your own pins. This really cuts down on the break-neck speed that you get with so-called 'automated' bowling alleys. Yes, here in Cullowhee we like things a little slower, even our bowling. The time it takes to reset your pins is a time you get to reflect on what life is really about. And what is life all about? The answer is bowling.
