PAGE 2/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/JANUARY 26, 1978 Carolinian Newsbriefs Student art show The 11th annual Asheville Art Museum student art show will be displayed February 7 through March 12 in the museum. The show, open to students in all western North Carolina colleges and universities, will be judged by Jerry Melberg, a curator of the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Entries and entry forms can be submitted to the museum, in the Asheville Civic Center, February 1 through 4. WCU students may submit entries to the WCU art department in Belk Building February 3. Artists are limited to two entries and must pay $1 for each work entered. No damage The Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department responded to an alarm at 9:45 p.m. Monday night at the Alpha Kappa Psi house, across from Harrill dorm. Chief Roy Shuler said the cause of the fire was a defective furnace. The fire caused no damages of injuries. Seminars held A series of seminars will be held in room 208 of the Natural Science Building at WCU during the spring semester. The dates, speakers and subjects are: February 3, Dr. Mike Riemann, Pfeiffer College, "Pyrolysis of Propargyl-Ethers"; February 10, Dr. Scott Pyron, Research Corp., "Cyclopropenyldiene—A Foiled Methylene?"; February 17, Dr. Gleb Mamantov from the University of Tennessee, "Analytical Appli- i Lisa Squires of Raleigh, NC is teaching a class in belly dancing which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:45 in the Cherokee Room. Lisa, who learned from a Turkish woman named Fiaka, has been practicing for about a year. Anyone interested in trimming off a few extra inches or just learning the art should attend tonight's meeting. Jacobs speaks A talk on "Picasso's Blue Period," postponed from January 17, has been rescheduled for January 31 at 8 p.m. in the Cherokee Room of the UC. Joe Jacobs, an instructor of art at WCU, will lecture at the first program of a four-part "Contemporary Arts Series" sponsored by the WCU art department and University Center. Jacobs received a BA degree from Rutgers-The State University in new Brunswick, N.J. and an MA degree from Brown University in Providence, R.I. He has taught at the University of Rhode Island, Williams College, Boston College and Southeast Massachusetts University, and is a doctoral candidate at Brown. Dr. Evan Firestone, an associate porfessor and chairman of the art department at WCU, will speak on "Edge Relationships in Recent Paintings" February 14. A talk on "Recent Developments in Realism" by Dr. Firestone and Jim Smith, a WCU associate art professor will be presented March 14. Jacobs will lecture April 13 on "Romantic Portraiture of the 18th Century." All three programs will be held at 8 p.m. in the Catamount Room. 'Stars' serves The Top of the Stairs restaurant in the University Center will serve hors d'oeuvres and coffee after three WCU Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee "Star Attraction" series programs. Swedish meatballs, sausage balls, cheese and other delicacies will be served after the January 26 performance of pianist Rosalyn Tureck, the January 27 performance of the Bach Aria Group, and the February 3 performance of The Acting Company. The LCE performances will be at 8:15 p.m. in WCU's Hoey Auditorium. The after-theater treat will cost $1. Foosball tourney The University Center Board will sponsor a double elimination foosball tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m. Trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place finishes. Registration will be from 8-5, Monday through Friday in the University Center office. The deadline for registration will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. Registration fee will be $2 per person. For further information, call the University Center offices. Those who have registered previously should eomp by and confirm their registration. Ceramics displayed Sculptor Frank Engle will present an illustrated lecture on his ceramic work at 3 p.m. January 27 in room 104 of the Belk Building. The talk is in conjuction with an exhibit in the art gallery in Belk, "New Attitudes in Clay," which includes work by Engle and Frank Fleming, his student. Engle is currently an art professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The exhibit and lecture are free to the public. Pittillo speaks A bag lunch seminar and a speech on "Bridging the Gap Between Scientists and Managers" by Dr. Dan Pittillo will be held from 12-12:50 p.m. February 2 in room 319 of the Natural Science building. This is part of a current project with the National Park Service to offer suggestions and make available information on plant habitats and endangered or threatened species more useful to the Blue Ridge Parkway managers. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
