  • DECEMBER 1, 1977/THE WESTERN CAROLINA World dependent on U.S. The world is becoming overwhelmingly dependent upon North America—and primarily the United States—for its food supply. WCU Chancellor Robinson told the North Carolina Farm-City Week kick-off luncheon in Raleigh Thursday. Some 250 rural and urban leaders from throughout the state attended the luncheon at which Robinson was the keynote speaker. The statewide gathering sparked a series of Farm-City celebrations and observances in the slate. Robinson said that world dependence on the United States for food, and the increasing likelihood that "the comfortable reserve of surplus stocks and excess production capacity...may now be history" add up to a "new role and new responsibility for North America." They signal the fact, he said, that the United States—and thus, the world—faces a dependence upon American agriculture. "We either be partners with the farmer." he said, "or pity the plight of us all." American farmers, he said, are becoming heavily dependent upon foreign nations because petroleum is the basic item needed for fertilizers and disease and pest control chemicals. The nation, as a result, must place "an increasingly high priority on the export of American agricultural products." The prospect lhal the need to export American farm produce may ultimately conflict with domestic food needs and create a major policy issue. Robinson warned, must be faced. "I think it becomes clearly apparent lo all thai the American farmer is an absolutely essential ingredient lo a successful economy for allot us." he said. Many world food studies and nutrition experts fear that within 25 years lhe overbalance between world population and world food supplies may result in world-wide famine. Robinson acknowledged, but he said "the problem is complex but nol impossible to "Increasingly, we must be concerned about a heller wav of life for people in all lands.
