With forty-three active members, he club has participated in the North Carolina State hampionships and the All South competition in power dting and physique. The stale championship ssas held on Sept. 10 and the WCU club brought home eight trophies. John Howie sas runner up in the Mr. North Carolina competition nd also received a first place tropin for the best back. In the power lifting competition at the state championships. Glen Helton placed second in the 132 lb. class. Carolyn Clark placed second in the 123 lb. class. Diane Horn placed third in the 114 lb. class. Alan Campos placed third in the 165 lb. class, and Jerry Denton placed third in the 181 lb. class. The All South Competition was held on Nov. 12 and twelve states ssere represented in the contest. WCU lifters brought home three trophies in the power lifting competition. Alan Campos placed second in the 181 lb. class. Carolvn Clark placed third in the 123 lb. class and lewis Reeves III placed third in the 132 lb. class. The barbell club will sponsor a Ladies Bench Press Contest and a Men's Odd Lift Contest Monday at 6 p.m. in the Reid weight room. The two dollar entry fee svill pay for trophies to be presented to the first and second place winners in each weight class. The Odd Lift Contest will consist of front squat, curl, and the behind the neck press. Both competitions will abide by AAU rules. Weigh-in will be held in the men's and ss omen's bathrooms next to the weight room thirty minutes before the competition begins. Sandra Fryc and Crystal Sharpe added 12 each luesdas evening as Western Carolina's women's basketball team won its season opener 69-63 over UNC-Asheville. The Lady Cats, coached' by Betty Westmoreland, trailed at the half but rallied convincingly in the second half. The WCU women will play at home again today at 5 p.m. against Catawba College in the preliminary to the men's game. Rebound leaders in the win over UNC-A were Sandra Julian with nine and Frye with eight.
