I want to go out in styl bv JOHN BURSON Sports Editor Thousands of young kids all over the nation crowd the sandlot fields each sear to participate in their favority pastime, baseball. All of them have one common dream. That dream is to play professional baseball. Wayne Tolleson. one of this year's football tri-captains. was one of those kids. Tolleson's boyhood dream came true this past summer when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and was presented with some very tempting offers. "It was the toughest decision I ever made in my life and I spent a lot of time thinking about it this summer, but I decided il would be better to finish my education here at WCU and hopefully get drafted next year." Tolleson slated. Tolleson is a senior here at WCU and has had an outstanding career in football and baseball for the past three years. He was a three sport man at Spartanburg High in South Carolina, where he had an outstanding high school career. After graduation, Tolleson was offered a pro baseball contract from the New York Mcts, bill he wauled to have a college education behind him. Tolleson had to make a decision on which college was appropriate. Tolleson explained, "I was offered scholarships just to play baseball and ones just to play football, but WCU offered me a chance to play both. I had heard that WCU had a good football coaching staff, but what really helped me make my decision was Coach Haywood, head he has a good reputation ^^^^^^^^^^^ develop as a baseball coach, bees >uld help When Tolleson came to WCU as a freshman, he had the opportunity to play behind one of WCU's greatest products, Jerry Gaines, at the wide reciever position on the football squad. "I didn't regret playing behind Jerry Gaines, because I learned so much from him." Tolleson When WCU played against Appalachian State University that year. Tolleson got his first chance to start and responded by catching the winning TD pass. He went on to start all of his sophomore year and really began to be noticed in his junior season. He recieved All American Honorable Mention and the Outstanding Athlete in Western North Carolina award. He also won the Pepsi Cola Sweepstakes award. Also he has been on the dean's list for the last two years. "Since 1 did decide lo come back ibis year, I want to make the besi of il and go out in Style." Tolleson commented. He is very enthused about this year's football learn and said ibis about the upcoming season. "A lot ot people have overlooked us this season because of our size, bill size never meant much to me anyway. If we play with enthusiasm and vill ha\ roud of this Tolleson has little inlercst in pursuing a pro-football career and is not planning toward it. "My future plans arc to play out this year's football and baseball seasons and sign a pro-baseball contract. Then after my baseball playing days are over, i plan to go into coaching." Tolleson said. \t present he has football on his mind and helping the Cats bid for a successful season.
