"The game with Marshall sorla epitomized our season to date," said Western's coach Bob Waters. Everyone seems to be gaining confidence in themselves, their teammates and what we are doing. We are playing with the level of emotion and enthusiasm that we must have ami we show eil a lol of courage by coining back in a very tough silutation. However, "he pointed out." we still do not have the 'killer instinct' and we must develop it lo have a chance to heal the oilier conference teams on our schedule." Waters was referring to his team's inability lo score alter driving inside the ten yard line on three occassions in the second half. A pair of Mike Pusev In Gerald Harp clutch passes accounted for the two loikhdow ns, Ihe second one coming with only 56 seconds letl in the game, but il was a productive ground game, a stubborn defense, and outstanding special teams performances that kept the Catamounts in Ihe game. Pusey, according to Waters, is not playing up to his form of hist season when he earned all-confenim e honors, and bis return to form is a key lo Western's future success. The junior quarterback completed onlv eight of 10 passes for 141 yards, but seven of those passes went for first downs. Harp's pair of ID receptions pushed his total to seven in five games, lying the 5'8", 151 pound sophomore with two former Catamounts for the season record in that department. Wayne Tolleson caught seven scoring passes in the '76 and '77 seasons and Sieve Spradling did it in 1969. Surprisingly, Western kept the ball on the ground for 61 plays. Senior Mitchell Ray and freshman Ricky Blake combined for 53 carries. Ray did most of the work in the first half and ended the evening with 116 yards on 29 carries. Blake, a Summerville, SC rookie returning after a shoulder separation that kept him out of the previous three games, took over in the second half and rolled up 101 yards in 24 attempts. "Our defensive unit did a fine job...the best overall job this season," said Waters. Defensive coordinator Don Powers concurred with the Cats head coach "Even THE KOUNTRY KUPBOARD Offering a complete line of Health Foods, Vitamins, Cosmetics & Gifts. The senior co captain totaled ten first-hit tackles, two quarterback sacks. caused two fumbles ami "set the tempo for our defense with his smart, aggressive play," according to Waters. Cornerback Willie Wells was also praised and the linebacker plav of Rand) Howard. Ricky Smith and Charlie Hughes was cited as "much improved." Sophomore led Dunn's two field goals aiul Strategical!) placed kickoffs paced the special teams. His kickoffs to the corners kept Marshall's usual long returns to less than a 2(1 yard average. Ihe punting of freshman Eddie Met oil and Pusev was also a key as the Thundering Herd did not return a Dunt. Meanwhile. the C.ils averaged 2N v.lids per kickoff return and picked up another 59 v ards in punt returns, Ihe victory was not without its loss though as senior fullback Andy Jordan suffered a double break to his right )aw bone and w ill be sidelined for al least the next three games and possibly longer. Jeff Norman, also a senior and occassional starter al both fullback and tailback, will be backed up by sophomore Clint Michalove and freshman Jimmy Hannon. 1 OOking lo the second half of the season. Waters savs his team is "gelling better" and "looking forward to making a run at the other teams in our conference." "We are traditionally a l.tte blooming team that plays its best football in the second halt of ihe season, so I think we can make a good run at the championship, or al least be a big factor in the race. live of our last six. games are against conference teams, so there is no doubt that we will have the Opportunity. The WCU Catamounts ended a frustrating losing streak with a come from behind win over Marshall University Saturday night. With 56 seconds left to play, a pass from Mike Pusey to Gerald Harp sealed the Catamount's victory. Although Coach Bob Waters was obviously pleased with the Cats' win, he dwelled upon the team's lack of enthusiasm on the field.
