  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THE OAEEK fcEAT TTKA ** Kappa Alpha Order w College (now Washingtoi December 21, 1865. Western's Delta Alpha Chapter was chartered on October 2, 1964 and is one of 103 chapters nationwide, 7 of which are located in North Carolina. These areas are Davidson College, Wake Forest University, UNC Chapel Hill, N.C. State, East Carolina University and Appalachian State. Kappa Alpha is a southern fraternity in the sense that its essential, teachings are focused upon the ideals of character, gentlemanliness arid leadership of which Robert E. Lee was the near perfect expression. Famous KA alumnus include General George S. Patton, Dean Rusk, pro football players Tommy Nobis and Sonny Jcrgcnson, and former Speaker of the House, Carl Albert. Western's KA's have just completed the finest year ever enjoyed by any fraternity intermural team, winning by the largest margin of points in the history of WCU Fraternity Athletic competition. They were also first in International League competition. Among the numerous charitable events held by the brothers this past year, included Muscular Dystrophy drive for crippled children and a marathon softball game to benefit Special Olympics. The social calendar for the year is highlighted by such events as rush parties and cbokouts, wine and cheese party, homecoming, red neck party, a pig roast, "The Convivium", celebrating the founding of the order and Robert E. Lee's birthday, Old South weekend and the annual KA alumni-active Christmas ball held in Charlotte. The home of the Western KA's, which is owned by the local chapter, is a large three story house built in 1852. It is located on a three and a half acre knoll overlooking Whitmire Stadium where the large gold letters "KA" can be seen. Primitive Man eventually found he could shape clay and heat it in a fire and produce a bottle, bowl, bead, or whatever, that was harder and more durable than normal mud... and so the phenomenon of ceramics hit the scene and grew into a massive technology which today gives us anything from bathtubs to coffee mugs. The Primitive Pottery Workshop this second session offered by the Art Department and instructed by Bill Buchanan was an attempt to recreate the process through which early man made his pots. All the clay used in the workshop was found and dug here in Cullowhee and shaped into bottles, bowls, beads, or whatever, by hand theoretically, without the aid of any manmade tools such as potter's wheels, trimming needles, or jack hammers. (We were fairly successful at maintaining our primitive standards.) All the pots and such were fashioned and allowed to dry to a bone-dry state, then they were fired in an open pit with local wood. (Here we fudged a bit by using wood we found which had been soaked in Creosote which matle one hell of a hot fire. We also fudged a bit more by hauling extra wood in the trunk of a Mercedes Benz, a tool which primitive man probably had not developed.) During the course of the workshop, Marian Bistline instigated a field trip to the McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee where we were exposed to Pre-Cherokee pots and parts of pots and pieces of parts... all of which, due to the age and beauty of this pottery, made one a bit more aware of the nature of clay and the pots it makes.
