  • THURSDAY, JULY 21, 1977 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 'Cullowhee Experience' for high school students To many people, summer school conjures up visions of dull lectures out of dusty books during the heat of the day when it would be better to be in the of swimmin' hole. At WCU's Cullowhee Experience, a four-week program for superior and gifted fifth- through tenth- grade students, the poetry books are there but they are accompanied by music, too. And the swimming. In Mrs. Cheryl Jenkins's tenth grade class, the difference between a simile and metaphor is still taught, but it's taught by using examples from popular musicians—the students are bending their ears to the strains of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and rock groups like Kansas and America. Mrs. Jenkins developed this program for her high school students in her native state of New Hampshire where she teaches in the town of Merrimac during the regular school year. "What we're trying to teach is the understanding of poetry and poetic terms through songs," Mrs. Jenkins said. She teaches the tenth grade unit called "Research and Writing": Analyzing Music, Poetry, and the Authors." One of her first premises is not to use love songs—"they're too simple," she says. During the first week, the students learned the poetic terms and some of the mechanisms for writing songs. Mrs. Jenkins said she stressed the importance of analy/ing the poetry in the songs from the musician's background. The second week, the students examined the different types of music from 1900 to 1970—jazz, blues, rock and roll, and some country music. The third week was when work began on research papers and oral reports. For this Mrs. Jenkins divided her class into two groups. One of the groups did a slide-tape show which examined the music of the 1970s. The other wrote a paper on a musician or poet. They took three songs or poets which represented the artist's work and compared and contrasted them with other work and interpreted them—examined what they thought the artist was trying to tell his audience. The final week was used to present the slide-tape show and give the oral reports. But the Cullowhee Experience is not all work. Students usually study their particular topic in the mornings, have a period of "classroom fun" during the early afternoon, and then have the remainder of the afternoon for sports, physical education, and recreation at WCU's pools, tennis courts, and gym. This year the four-week program, one of the summer projects of WCU's School of Education and Psychology, is centered around the theme, "Toward the Tricenten- nial." The fifth- through tenth-graders come from throughout North Carolina and six other states and are nominated for the program by school principals and guidance counselors. Mrs. Jenkins's tenth graders are a competitive lot. When she introduced a classroom version of the old television show. "1 be College Bowl." the students jumped at it. After a while, a team of "superstars" was recognized by the class, and they competed with the ninth graders in the program. Classroom college bowl. Rock music. Tennis, anyone?
