  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN TUESDAY, MAY 3, 1977 No conference title for Cats The Catamounts' dreams of winning the Southern Conference title in their first season of competition in the league ended Saturday night in Charleston, S.C. as East Carolina swept a doubleheader from The Citadel to finish first. The two victories for East Carolina gave them the Southern Conference outright, leaving WCU in second place and The Citadel in thrid. The Cats closed their regular season Saturday afternoon in Atlanta by raking Georgia Tech for 14 runs and taking their 27th victory of the year, a 14-5 triumph over the Yellow Jackets. Tech, now 15-6, started ace pitcher Jerry Bass in the game and Bass checked the Cats for three.innings before WCU cut loose with five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Willie Carpenter ripped a three-run homer to get things going and then David Ball drove in Ernie Lasher and Dennis Blake with a two-run single. WCU was in command the rest of the way as freshman Danny Dubard, making his first start ever, kept the Jackets in check and allowed only one run through the first six innings. Dubard was chased in the bottom of the seventh when Tech scored four runs but senior Tim Deweese came on to allow just one base runner the rest of the way while WCU had another five-run rally in the ninth. Western had 17 hits in the game with Ball going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored and a double. Freddie Brown went 3-for-6 with three RBI and Mark Resser went 3-for-6 with a two-run homer. Leftfielder Chip Koontz, who had two hits, robbed Tech's Doug Ibele of a three-run homer in the fifth inning with a leaping catch over the fence to provide the final out of a testy inning. The victory was the eighth straight for the Cats, and their 22nd win in their last 25 outings. WCU has one hope remaining of gaining a berth in the NCAA Atlantic Regionals after finishing the season with a 27-5 record. All conference runners-up across the country go into a pool which the at-large teams will be selected. Third baseman David Ball awaits the ball before putting the tag on a sliding Erskinc player during Friday's game. The Cats beat Erskine 4-3. [Photo by Fred Barbour] New Now Open!
