  • Rob Daves THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Ah. it's that time again - Winter Quarter at Western Carolina University. Another short one. when professors try to cram 10 weeks of work into nine. And of course the Cullowhee Rainy Season is here, making things even more glum. But the work, the weather, and other sundry vissitudes are bearable. Witi, an early start and concentration, the work can be done. Nothing can be done about the weather (though God knows folks have tried). But there is one of those vissitudes that some people could change to make the quarter a little more bearable. And that is the attitude, especially the kind found among people ,vho meet and deal with the public, particularly students. Rather than being courteous and helpful, some seem to go out of their way to be unpleasant and irritating with a dare-to-knock-thc- chip-ofl-mv -shoulder tone of voice. For example. Wednesday morning I went to the gym to take a shower and politely asked the attendant for a towel and a bar of soap. Instead of pleasantly asking if he might see my identification, he demanded in a venomously superior tone of voice that I produce an ID card. But it would have been much more pleasant for me (and probably for him, too) if the tone of his voice had not signaled that he had more important things to do than demeaning himself to wait on a student. But once is only happenstance. What really upset me was that just a little later a security officer used the same tone of voice when he informed me in a by-god manner that if I didn't move my car. it would be towed away. Unpleasant? Sure it was. And I'm sure that the same sort of thing occurs more frequently than necessary. All that needs to be done is for public servants to realize that that is what they are there for--to serve the public, not to demean or patronize them. Winter quarter, with the rain and the workload, would be much more bearable. THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 1977 ;'::::.:."
