  • Page 10 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1976 VCB provider four-faded programming Have you ever looked at one of those beautiful posters stuck (crookedly) on the breezeway of Killian Building and wondered what UCB stood for? Well, here's your chance to be enlightened after all the pondering and mental struggle you have been through. The UCB is the University Center Board, an organization composed of twelve general board members and the interested portion of the WCU student body. For the 1976-1977 school year, Ron Cline holds the office of President; Layne Barrett is Vice-president; Elizabeth Owen is Secretary; Bob Jones is Business Manager. The other members of the board are Jackie Green, John Lane, Sarah Morrow, Alan Myers, Tina Smith, Carrie Thomas, Gary Bogle and Terry Yoder. The UCB is structured so that its greatest resource is the student body. Since the purpose of the UCB is to provide programming in tour major areas (social, recreational, educational, and entertainment), five Board members chair specific committees, while the remaining three chair general com mittees. The output of all eight of these committees is what enables the UCB to take credit for so much of the programming at WCU. None of this would be possible without student input, however. Jerry Yoder chairs the Recreation Committee, Jackie Green the Dance and Concerts Committee, Sarah Morrow the Exhibits Committee, Gary Vogler the Special Events Committee, and Carrie Thomas the Publicity Committee. The remaining Board members chair three general committees whose functions are to assist the other committees and to handle those aspects which do not fall under specific categories. Students who are interested in the UCB should come to the General Committee Meeting on Tuesday, October 5, in the Cherokee Room at 7 p.m. Events regularly sponsored by the University Center Board and already scheduled for this year include the following: the New Car Show, Casino Night, the Fun House, the Christmas Bazaar, the Tubing Race, and Almost Anything Goes Day. Winter quarter in Columbia meets Thurs. There will be a meeting of the students interested in participating in the Winter quarter in South America this year in 105 McKee at 7 p.m. Thursday. Dr. John Chapman, head of the earth sciences department will discuss some of the academic aspects of the program and illustrate his presentation with color slides. Students will have a chance to ask questions about aspects of the program. The Winter quarter in South America takes a group of about 20 students and two faculty members to Colombia, South America, where they study in Cali, earning up to 18 credit hours, and travel to the major cities. All interested students are invited to attend the meeting. Students unable to attend should drop by the Modern Foreign Languages office, 103 McKee to provide their current address. K. Hinds University Center. Greek Beat Interfraternity Council will host a smoker for all men this Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Grand Room of the UC. Interfraternity Council President Gary J. Hall announced that all men, especially freshmen and transfer students are invited. All campus social fraternities will be represented, he said. Hall said the smoker's purpose is to give male students a chance to examine "Greek Life"at Western. The smoker will begin the rush programs for all fraternities for Fall quarter. Hall stated that it was important for any male interested in fraternities to attend this smoker so as to meet the respective fraternities. "Fraternities consist of individuals working together for group goals," Hall said. He emphasized that fraternity life "doesn't break down individuality, but rounds out your college life and helps you prepare for life after college." WCU's fraternities have an "open rush"system in which men may join throughout the year; but during the next two weeks each fraternity will have events and programs to familiarize interested men with the fraternity system. Any questions men have about the Fraternity system at WCU will be answered. Casual dress is urged and refreshments will be served.
