I thought you might be interested in printing this letter which I received in conjunction with the Prohibition movement in Jackson Co. Rev. White has given me permission to forward this to the Western Carolinian for publication. Thanks, Greg Dear Mr. Teetsell, We of the First Antioch Freewill Independent Baptist Church of Rogers | THE E RITZ THEATER SAYS HI WCU STUDENTS" r*f^ SHOULD WE FEAR HIM.. On many occasions, the Western Carolinian, which is supported by our tax dollars, through your column and the editorials of Mr. Tony Brown, Jr. has repeatedly said that it is unfair and unreasonable that beer and wine sales, excepting the Sylva ABC store, which this congregation fought to the end, are prohibited in Jackson County. Why is our fine county's "dryness" such a question at tax-supported WCU? Are you young people so devoid of God's message that alcohol must be imbibed in order that such events as football games and social gatherings are enjoyable? It is bad enough when so many young people are confused and don't attend church regularly and don't get into some of the fine "Youth Programs" which we have set up, but to see some poor and impressionable young person get the idea that it is moral and indeed even "Christian" to drink is both disgusting and shocking. I have seen young people in college drinking. Why, when I was a young man in the Army, I saw grown men acting like they didn't care the least for their souls and debauching in every imaginable pleasure - some took to even playing cards and having (and some bragged about it!) illicit sex. All of those men were inspired not by the love of God but by the devilish love of themselves. And there awaits eternal damnation for those who do not vote "dry". Voting "dry" will keep God in the hearts of our county. And will keep young people like yourself, Mr. Teetsell, from continuing your sinful ways of mocking so many fine institutions which have made Western North Carolina a showplace of morality and good old fashioned Law and Order. Yours truly, Rev. Christian White Pastor of the First Antiock Freewill Independent Baptist Church - "We reject evolution and accept God's word." In view of being called "sinful" by Rev. White, I have decided to reveal my true identity: THE THE TRUE CONFESSIONS OF A SOCIOLOGIST I AM A REFUGEE FROM THE 23rd CENTURY the Directory, formerly the Library of Congress. My job is to assimilate as much data as I can on the Theocratic culture of Southern Appalachia. I was educated by the Directory School of Dallas and hold an E-4 certificate, or what you refer to as a Master's degree in Sociology and Ancient Phonetics. My primary goal here is to determine whether or not in the period known to us as the pre-Despotic Christian era there was sufficient disenchantment with existing religious systems and if so, why? ' The Directory is anxious to discover what the failings were so that when our implementation of the Dedalus/Directory Plan of Unified Worship and Superivison starts in two years, we will be fully able to establish a Directory- oriented religion without resorting to some of the earlier schemes which, in at least two known cases, caused extreme bloodshed in order that civil peace could be maintained." Signed, Greg L. Teetsell "And now we go to our panel and our first question to any one of these three gentlemen. And Betty White wins the toss, so she goes first." "Number One, what has prompted this interest in the area of religion? I thought it was passe?" "Well, you see, religion, and in turn guilt, are strong motivating factors and we have chosen this area of the United States for the same reason we have studied, for example, the mating rituals of Algorogrozin of Alpha Cen- turi and their forebearers, the Sizwinz of Outer Polaris. We have gained immeasurable social control from the study of these, er, 'people', and have..." "Time's up, Orson Bean, the next question please..?" "Ah, Number Two, what is this Directory' of which you speak?" "It is the combined 'systems of the Limited State of pre-diaspora Europa and the Industrial Religionism of the American Chicagoian Dynasty." (click) I hate Teevee. I only want a beer store nearby. Maybe even a nice quiet little tavern to get fatter in, to debate Dylan in. But I guess I'll have to settle for "To Tell the Truth." Remember, yours is the faith that can light the world. Set fire to the church of your choice. "Here on 'To Tell the Truth' tonight, we have a most amazing young man. He claims to be a Sociologist from r$»«oK.' the 23rd century. Now, may I have the cX." statement please? "Thankyou."
