  • PAGE 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1975 HANK KOMODOWSKI Sports Editor SPORT 3 Back on the winning track? by Hank Komodowski Sports Editor It may not seem like it, but now is probably the best time for the Western Carolina University football team to have its homecoming. The reason? After last Saturday's 27-6 loss to UT-Chattanooga and the third in a row for the football Cats, Homecoming Day might just be the incentive the Western team needs to get back on the winning track. The loss to UT-Chatanooga, now 3-3-1, leaves the Cats'own record at 2-5, with three tougn teams still on the horizon. WCC returns to Whitmire Stadium, however, where the crowd surely will be more receptive than the partisan homecom'ng crowd of 7,000 which cheered UT-C in its win over Western. Statistics pretty well revealed the story as the Moccasins dominated every category. UT-Chattanooga rushed for 276 yards on 56 carries and added 173 passing yards for a total of 449 offensive yards. WCU, on the other hand, could muster only 83 yards on the ground and another 81 in the air for a meager 164 yard showing. Chattanooga topped the WCU squad in first downs, more than doubling the Cats', 26-12. Two interceptions and a fumble also did not help the WCU effort. 1'he one bright spot of the afternoon for the Catamounts came in the third quarter, when split end Wayne Tolleson hit Jeff Ciccone on a perfectly executed end-around pass play, good for 32 yards and a touchdown. At the time the strike narrowed the margin to 13-6, and WCU was back in the game. Chattanooga's quarterback Doug Elstad and running back Donald Byrd then combined strong running and timely passes to score twice more for the Mocs and put the game out of reach. Tailback Jerry Siler, subbing for the Cats' injured Darrell Lipford, led all WCU rushers with 64 yards on 12carries. Linebacker Kenny Davis topped the WCU defensive stats with 11 solo tackles and four assists. WCU's opponent at Homecoming will be Middle Tennessee State. Cats topple Wofford 4-2 in soccer action Sunday Western Carolina University's soccer team showed it had that big offensive threat for the first time this season as the Cats toppled Wofford College 4-2 in soccer action Sunday afternoon. The win was the third victory at home for the Western squad in their four outings on the Astroturf. The going has not been as easy on the road, as the Cats have not won away, losing two games in overtime periods, WCU struck quickly Sunday, scoring first when halfback Charlie Lombard punched home a rebounded shot. Wofford then fought off one Western attack after another, and at the half the score remained 1-0. Wofford evened the score at 1-1 early in the second half as WCU goalie Mike Booker stopped three successive shots, but not a fourth, as the Terriers flooded the goal with shots. WCU's Lombard then connected with senior forward Jim Denning, whose head shot again gave the Cats the lead. Wofford continued to fight back, however, hitting on a 30- yard shot minutes later to again knot the score, this time at 2-2. WCU fifth place in state meet by Jim Cox Western Carolina University's cross country team captured fifth place in the state meet at Raleigh last Saturday. Or was it second? Technically they finished fifth, but realistically they should be a- warded the Bronze medal. Throw out those big behemoths of Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State and you have only Appalachian State left who finished ahead of WCU and is on the same level of competition. Duke, finishing with 19 points had runners finishing first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth for an easy win. WCU runner Dennis Kaspryzk took ninth place, only a minute behind the top finisher. The Cat's Gary Knott took 13th place out of the TURN TO PAGE 7 Western Carolina captain Fred Irving finally scored the winning goal with 15 minutes remaining in the game as the forward from Concord took an assist from senior halfback Hank Komodowski and headed the ball past the Terrier goalie. Then, with minutes remaining in the game, WCU's Denning scored his second goal of the game. Freshman John Munsch received credit for an assist. The WCl soccer team will be on the road Wednesday for a match with Warren Wilson College. The college in Swan- nonoa fields a team comprised almost entirely of foreign exchange students and always places well in the NAIA rankings. WCU's next home game will be Saturday at 6:30, following the football game on Whitm;re Stadium's Astroturf. mmm Gibsorv Furniture Co. Svrlv*,r<.C.
