  • TUESDAY NOVEMBER 19, 1974 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Gaines wonft make playoffs Jerry Gaines, star pass receiver and one of the greatest football players to don the purple and gold of Western Carolina University, will not be able to play in the Nov. 30 playoff game at Louisiana Tech. Gaines, who has caught 42 passes in eight games this year for over 750 yards, has been ruled ineligible for all postseason competition. The reason is that Gaines was granted another year of college eligibility by the NCAA for the 1974 season, but this does not include any extension past the regular season. WCU coach Bob Waters, when asked about the Gaines ruling, said, "It's no surprise to us that Jerry is ineligible. We've known it since the beginning of the season. It's still too bad, though, seeing how Jerry has done a great deal in bringing us the opportunity to play in that game." According to Waters it is not unusual for a team to have several athletes ineligible for the bowl games. "Last year Western Kentucky lost about five or six players after the regular season," Waters added. Tennessee State was another school last year which would have lost seven players if they had accepted a bowl bid. Instead, they decided to end their season with a 10-0 record and decline an offer to the playoffs. Louisiana Tech, Western Carolina's opponent in the game, will also lose a couple of players this year for the same reason. WCU will now go into the game without the potent passing team of Jeff Walker (injured) and Jerry Gaines, but Coach Waters is still quite confident in his reserves, "Wayne Tolleson will play in place of Gaines in Louisiana and I expect him to do just fine. Danny Dalton also showed he could win last week against Western Kentucky.
