'do it' 20 - 2 msm Mm WCU quarterback Danny Dalton has Jerry Gaines spotted for a pass in Saturday's game against Western Kentucky. Gaines has managed to shake the two men covering him, but a few majorettes in the stands seem to have lost someuung. Others are finishing up on that homework. It's all in a football game. (Photo by Steve Cook). Cats make it to top By HANK KOMODOWSKI After years of just missing, the Western Carolina University football team has made it to the top. The Catamounts have been picked as one of the top eight NCAA Division 11 teams in the nation and have won a berth in the playoffs to determine the national champion. The Cats will play last year's defending national champs, Louisiana Tech, in the first round Nov. 30, when Western travels to Ruston, La., the home field of Louisiana Tech. Western Carolina was ranked 11th in the polls last week, but an upset victory over Western Kentucky (ranked eighth) and an 8-1 record gave the nod to the Cats. WCU was one of four at- large selections for the play offs. Louisiana Tech was selected as the host team in the South, while the University of Delaware was picked as host in the East. Central Michigan University and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas were chosen as hosting teams in the Midwest and West, respectively. The four at~large teams were picked regardless of region and received .pairings by drawing from a hat. Western Carolina drew Louisiana Tech, the team which has led the .AP polls all year as the number one team in the nation. Boise State University was paired with Central Michigan, the winner going on to face the victor of the WCU-Tech, contest in the Pioneer Bowl, held Dec. 7 in Wichita Falls, Tex. Alcorn State University will play Nevada-Las Vegas with the winner going to the Grantland Rice Bowl to play the winner of the Youngstown University vs. Delaware game. The winner of these two bowls will play for the national championship in the Camelia Bowl, held in San Diego, Cal. on Dec. 14. Last year I-ouisiana Tech beat Western Kentucky 34-0 to take the 1973 national title. By Hank Komodowski Sports Editor Western Carolina-20, Western Kentucky-2. The score in this case did tell the story as the high-flying WCU Catamounts raced to their eighth straight win of the season Saturday with an impressive upset thrashing of WKU's Hilltoppers. More important than the victory, however, was the fact that the Cats showed they could win the "big game," could win with a new quarterback, and most of all, showed they had a team worthy of post-season honors. Defense has come to be the WCU trademark as of late and the WKU game was no exception as the Catamount "stoppers" smothered the Hilltoppers' offense time after time. At the half, WKU's attack, averaging 32 points a game, had been shut out and the Cats took a 3-0 lead into the intermission on the strength of a 40-yard Jimmy Joyce field goal midway through the first quarter. A record crowd of 11,300 cheered the Cats back onto the field to start the second half, but was soon quieted as the Hilltoppers sustained a drive to the WCU 18 where they threatened to score. A clutch interception by Catamount David Rathburn, however, killed the drive and also gave the senior cornerback the WCU career record for interceptions with 19 steals. Western Kentucky scored its only points of the game seconds later when WCU quarterback Danny Dalton was tackled in his own end zone for a safety. The next time Western Carolina got the ball it was a different story as Dalton found split end Wayne Tolleson open in the WKU secondary for a 64- yard TD pass and a 10-2 lead. WCU moverback Terry Moore started the fourth quarter off on the right foot, with an interception that set up Joyce's second field goal of the day, this time a 25-yarder, putting the Cats ahead by a 13-2 margin. Another interception by Rathburn, his eighth of the year and 20th career snag, was returned 30 yards to the Hilltopper 17. Two plays later WCU fullback Jeff Kirwin put the game out of reach as he plowed through the WKU line for the final five yards and a touchdown to put the score at its final 20-2. The Western Carolina defensive line, led by Felix Setzer, Greg Whitesides and Jim Calaverne was stingy to say the least. Aided by linebackers Steve Yates and Monroe Sanders the WCU defense held the Hill- topper runners to only 52 yards on 39 carries, an average of only 1.3 yards per trip. Darrell Lipford, the Cats' freshman running sensation, gained 77 yards on 21 carries. Prior to Saturday's game, the WKU defense had been allowing an average of only 46 team rushing yards. WCU quarterback Danny Dalton hit on 10 of 17 passes for 137 yards and one TD, while giving up one interception. Western Carolina's defensive secondary was unmatched, however, as the quartet of David Rathburn, Allen Corpening, Terry Moore and Gregg Walton combined for three interceptions and held three WKU quarterbacks to 140 yards on 12 of 31 passes. Most of that came in the final minutes, with the Cat defenders back in a prevent defense. WCU punter Chuck Milner Inst the individual battle with Charlie Johnson, WKU's national leader, but kept the Hilltoppers out of good field position kicking seven times for a 41.8 yard average. The win by WCU also marked the first time in nine years the Kentuckians have been held without a touchdown. This Saturday the Cats travel to Spartanburg, S. C. to play Wofford College in the last regular season game for WCU. Kickoff time for the game with Wofford, currently 6-3, is slated for 7:30 p.m. Grant awarded WCU A $167,000 grant has been awarded to Western Carolina University's Developmental E- valuation Center by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. The money is a continuation grant for the 11-year-old center, and represents a sizeable increase over last year. The grant will be used to provide developmental evaluation services for pre-school children and their families in Jackson, Macon, Cherokee, Clay, Swain, and Graham counties. Director of the center, Dr. Hoyt Ponder, said the center has become less clinically-oriented and has moved toward an outreach program to find children who are lagging de- velopmentally. Developmental disabilities specialists now are stationed in Murphy, Waynesville and Cullowhee. Above, star defensive tackle Felix Setzer hauls down the second of three quarterbacks Western Kentucky put on the field to face the Catamounts. Setzer and a fired up defensive team were the first team to hold WKU without a thouchdown in nine years. (Photo by Steve Cook).
