Because Of Gas Shortage Senate Proposes Early Graduation The mysterious mountain fog quietly blankets Cullowhee, obliterating all warnings that this sidewalk leads to. .. Brown Cafeteria. (Photo by Steve Cook) What Really Did Occur In Chile? by Mary Salvador Allende, the world's first legally elected Marxist President, sought to establish in Chile a socialist government which gave political freedom to all. During Allendc's three years in office, there was no country in the world which accorded its citizens a greater degree of freedom. Both leftist and rightist political philosophies operated without restraint, and usurpation of civil rights was almostnon-exlstent. Considered to be the I-atin American country with the least degree of political turbulence, the question as to why Allende was assassinated and his socialist government replaced by an oppressive military regime is one which often arises, On September 11, 1973 Allende was killed during a prolonged air and ground attack on the Moneda Palace in Santiago, As the attack gained momentum, leftist radio stations began to mysteriously disappear and armies of uniformed carbineros filled the streets. Government officials estimate the number of deaths related to the coup at 250; more credible are the many sources who place the estimates in the thousands. Mass arrests of students and professors of Marxism, foreigners, journalists, and leftist workers occurred, Although the coup had been anticipated by some, none were prepared for the ruth- lessness and speed with which Allendc's government was demolished. When it was all over , few, if any, vestiges of socialism and political freedom remained. Employing censorship, torture, and terrorism to spread its rule, the junta Yakush has tried to eradicate any and all opposition, and has undone any of Allende's programs which my have proved advantageous to Chile, There is much evidence to suggest that the present Chilean regime is the most oppressive ever know1.! in Latin America, Most of the reports coming in from Chile are pure prop- oganda written by professional politicians, anti-Marxists, and the American press, An all- out effort has been made by the press to confirm the story that the coup was necessary in order to end Allende's reign of widespread disunification, inflation, and social injustice, At the bottom of all this chaos, they claim, is the Popular Unity part) which backed Allende. Another less simplistic and more rational reason forthe so- called "failure" of Allende's socialist programs is obvious: that efforts at establishing a socialist government mel with , blackmail and resistance from "capitalist" world powers, including the United Suites. One of the keys to Allende's "democratic road to socialism'' was the Agrarian Reform, an effort to increase agricultural output by fostering socialist agricultural techniques. First utilized by Eduarde Frci of the Christian Democrats, Agrarian Reform was enacted effectively by Allende. It called for large tracts of land to be expropriated from the elite and given to the peasants, who in turn were being educated in Socialist agricultural techniques CONTINUED PAGE 4 . . . . by Chuck In a short session, the Student Senate met last night and considered a bill recommending that music courses be allowed more academic credit, Jim Davidson, the bill's sponsor, supported the bill because he felt that academic credit should be given based on the lime spent in class, At the present time most music courses are allowed one hour of credit for three or four hours of class time, Mike Killam reported that the music department gives academic credit based on standards set up in order to keep the department's academic accreditation. He pointed out that in theory no outside preparation is needed for these courses so they are considered labs, As labs they are subject to this rule. He went on to say thai if more credit were to be given and the department's accreditation lost, the value of grades given by the music department, and ultimately by the entire university, would be lowered. Davidson then amended the bill so it would read to be an act to recommend that the music department look into the possibility of giving more academic credit for its' courses. The Klrtlej amended bill was then sent to the senates's Academic Affairs Committee for investigation and report, Davidson was unhappy with this action and moved to relieve the Academic Affairs Committee of this bill so it could be brought immediately to a vote, He maintained that the bill was unchanged by its amendment, He also claimed to want to "salvage some hope for the music people," The Senate voted against Davidson's mution, and the amended bill was sent to committee, It will come up for final consideration next week. In other business Comptroller Butch Cummins reported that since his report last quartet- the SGA has spent $2,601.70. This money was spent on stipends, office supplies, Harold Rogers' trip to the UNC Presidents' Union meeting at Chapel Hill, and other miscellaneous expenses, The Senate voted in favor of a proposal to have graduation exercises on the Friday of exam week this year, This proposal was made in light of the gas shortage. It is hoped that by having graduation earlier than usual, traveling to and from WCU for the ceremony- would be cut. February Gasoline Situation Is Varied February's gasoline situation for the area is varied from gas station to station, Some gasoline stations have a good supply, such as Fred's American which is still pumping January's quota. College Gulf has the same supply for this February as it did for February. 1973, Rogers' Exxon has also gotten its monthly supply, Other stations, however, were out of gas at times last month and expect to run out this month also, Phillips 66 CIRUNA Presents Firsthand Info On Chilean Coup Students interested in eye ness accounts of "whathappened in Chile" are urged to attend CIRUNA's Symposium on Chile, to be held Wednesday in Killian 104, Mai Bochner and Ken Hansen, two Ph. D, candidates at 'kale and Harvard Universities who were studying Latin American History In Chile at the time of the coup, will be conducting the symposium. Mai Bochner his stressed that, the symposium will be informal CONTINUED PAGE 2 . . . „ in Sylva was out of gasoline an entire week at the end of January. A cut-back in supply will probably result in the station being low, if not out, of gas at the end of this month. The Super-Test in Sylva, although having a cut in its supply, still has an adequate supply, B&C Grocery and Service Station was out of gas the first of January and again in the middle of the same month. They are out again now and d > not expect any gas until next week. The operator there said that their supplier wasn't gettting any gas so the station doesn't get any, Being independent, ihe station Is having more difficulty maintaining a supply. Most stations have had monthly increases in the cost of gasollns per gallon. Although not definite as of yet, it is expected liat by Ihe end of this month prices will exceed the present ones, It is felt by some operators of stations that limiting sales of gas is the only way to keep the station in regular operation. Stations running out of gasoline for certain periods lose money that might have been made onpriducts other than gasoline because there are no customers. However, no stations have yet limited their sales.
