  • PAGE 4 TUESDAY FEBRUARY 5, 1974 THE WESTERN CAROLLMAN Chilean Junta .... FROM PAGE 1 with the ultimate goal of increasing production capacity. Agrarian Reform was not a quick solution to Chile's food shortage. It was, rather, a long term solution, during the interim of which food had to be imported at government expense. By denial of credit and loans and blackmailing the nationalization of Chile's copper industries, Chile's economv was effectively crippled by the world powers, one of the most prominent being the I'.S.A. These severe economic measures leveled on Chile are known as the "Invisible Blockade". Having reduced agrarian reform, to rubble through these measures, the rightists were provided with a good "reason" for a coup - Allende's socialist programs had wrought econ omic chaos in Chile. Although the American press would have it believed that this reason was widelv accepted by the i"workeres." not one industry shut down during massive strikes by lawyers, doctors, and truck drivers to protest Allende's policies. It is clear that the "workers" had no intention of going over to the other side, and that the military coup was a desperate measure taken by the elitists to stomp out socialism. Since the coup last September, the bill of fare presented to Chileans by the junta has undergone a change from "paradise" to "austerity." Appalachian State and Catawba took the measure of the Cats in December. The Apps won 78-71 in Boone when Ilartbarger's crew played its poorest game of the season and Catawba claimed victory, 87-86, on a last second foul shot. U1M "DON'T LOOK t'h\ BASEMEHF prices, agricultural production crippled by truck drivers' strikes-these are a few of the overwhelming odds facing the Chilean junta. Some feel that it is only a matter of time before Chile's economv folds. Then, there is Ihe matter of outside involvement: Malcolm Bochner, a Ph.D. candidate in Latin American Studies at Vale University, was in Chile al the time of the coup and suffered many of its repercussions. He feels thai "there was direct I ,.s. Involvement" in Allende's overthrow. If the I'.S. felt it necessary lo be an accomplice In such violent and bloody circumstances, it is likely that they nviv follow through with economic aid for Chile's e- Conomv. Whether we, as taxpayers in this "democracy" would sanction aid to Chile under present circumstances, is doubtful. And whether we, as taxpayers, would have anything at all to sav about it, considering the innumerable transactions made by the U.S. government behind close doors, is still another question.
