  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday April 17, 1973 page 7 ■rWXtW Cats Run With Bad Luck At Davidson Relays By Hank Komodowski, Sports Editor The 14th running of the Davidson Relays was held on Saturday, April 14 this year, but as far as Western Carolina University trackmen were concerned it might as well have been Friday the 13th. Nothing went right for the Cat relay- teams as freak accidents, injuries, and spills held Western to only a fifth place finish in the 14-team field. To begin with, in the 440- relay, WCU finished out of the running when anchorman Clar ence lhomas pulled a muscle on the last handoff with WCU leading at the time. Because of the injury to Thomas, coach Paul Jones had to run a makeshift team in the mile and two- mile relays, usually top events for the Cats. The result, dismal fourth and fifth placed finishes. Then, a fallen hurdle in the shuttle relay killed WCU chances, and once again, fifth place was the result. To top things off, however, Western received the ultimate in bad luck as the 880- Relay team was disqualified when Craig Goodspeed stumbled over a fallen Berry College runner (eventual meet winners) and dropped the baton. Once again, a top event for the Cats. Once again, the worse of consequences. When the smoke had cleared, the final tally had Berry College winn'ng the meet with a total of 79 points. West Georgia College followed with 55, while Wake Forest took third with 49 and Appalachian State at fourth with 47 for the day, Next came Weifern Carolina with 34, High Point College with 27, Catawba College 20andhost Davidson netted 17 points. Rounding out the field in the Relays were, in order, Cumberland College, Sewanee College, Carson-Newman College, Emory University, Wofford Col lege and Campbell College, CONTINUED Page 8 . . . . pizzas: \:?5 I.50-2.Z5
