  • Tuesday, February 8, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 3 Up and down Cats whip Carson-Newman / Smith: 24 points - 23 rebounds Track team impressive WCU's talented indoor track team continued to place high against major competition as they took two first, two seconds, one third, and two sixth pla= ces in the University of Tennessee's All Comers Meet last Friday in Knoxville, Jerry Gaines, the Cats top jumper, claimed first place in the triple-jump event for the second time this season at Sto- kley Athletic Center with a jump of 48 feet 7.5 inches. Ben Bailey added another first place as he ran his first indoor half-mile in 1:57.5. Western's sprinter Clarence Thomas won second place in the 60 yd. dash with a time of 6.2 seconds. Thomas finished behind Olympic hopeful Ben Vaughn of Georgia Tech who won the event at 6.1. Teammate Steve Fleming took third in the 600 yd. run and later was part of the mile relay team of Roy Bryan, Johnny Moore and Thomas posted a hot 3:32.4 time for second place. Other Cats with respectable finishes in their events were: Terry Helms, 6th in the mile; Tom Gibbons, 6th in the 1000 yd, run. He has had no problems "putting it together" this season. In fact, he has done this several times. The problem is that pieces keep falling off or at the best malfunctioning. So, in one or two games, the Cats look super, and then just about they get rolling, they fizzle and sputter. . Last night Western Carolina had it as they irouncea oar- son-Newman's Eagles 93-86. It was the same team that beat the Cats earlier this season on one of the nights they didn't have it. Big 6-foot-8 David Smith came through in his habitual style with 24 game-leading points, But of more interest, Smith also pulled down 23 rebounds as Western dominated the boards 58-31. Other Cats joining Smith in the double figures were Rick Campbell with 23, Howard Winston with 13,andAlbertToomer with 12. WCU led by as many as 23 points early in the second hr.li after building up a 18-point halftime lead at 50-32. But the Eagles, who have been known to stage come-backs in Reid Gym, pulled to within seven points with less than a minute left in the game. Carson-Newman's MikeOgan and Mark Mason led their team with 17 and 18 points respectively. Still, despite the fine performance WCU had against the Eagles, they were .jst coming out of the shadows c- a 67-58 loss to District 6 loe Mars Hills. - The Catamounts first loss in the district this season. It wasn'ta question of whether the Lions had a better team than Western, but rather which team could play the sloppiest according to one fan. The Catamounts had 115 scoring opportunities yet only capitalized on 32 of them. "It was the low point of our season," said WCU's Hartbarger. Compounding the Cats inability to score was the fact that they committed 28 turnovers, though at halftime Western was down only one point 34-33. David Smith had another good night with 26 points, but he could find aid in only one of his other teammates — Rod Snyder had 15 points. Now that the Cats have lost a district encounter the upcoming game against UNC-Asheville on the road this Thursday looks more and more crucial on the path to the district tourney in March. WCU wrestlers host Tennessee tonight Western Carolina University's Catamount wrestling team will end the home portion of its 1972 schedule tonight at 7:30 as they meet/strong Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee in Reid gym. The University of Tennessee contest will be Western's ninth match this season and marks the first time a IT wrestling team has visited Cullowhee. Last season Coach Bob Setzer's Cats defeated the Vols 21-17 in Knoxville, Co-captain Doug Barrier, a 177-pound junior from Spencer, N.C., leads the WCU squad in scoring with 33 points. Bar rier has a perfect 8-0-0 record having had two pins, five decisions, and one forfeit. ■Barrier's teammate, Bo Russell, leads the team in pins with four. The 142-pound junior is also from Spencer and is second in total points for WCl' with 30. Russell has a 6-2-0 record overall. As a team, the Catamounts have out-scored their opponents 213-123 and have a combined individuals' record of 46-29-3. Setzer's charges have pinned 18 of their opponents while them" selves being pinned only four times. The only category Western trails in statistic-wise is in decisions. Western's opponents have won 25 decisions to the Cats 24. Thus, it seems WCU is much stronger if the match doesn't go three periods. Leading the Volunteers will be two time All-Southeastern Conference champion Glenn Rievley in the 118-pound class. Siler signs giving WCU two of top three The sun shines a little brighter on Western Carolina football again today, Jerry Siler, highly sought-after running back from Jordan- Matthews in Siler City, N.C. signed last night. By concensus of opinion of state-wide sports media, Siler is one of the top three running backs coming out of the North Carolina high school ranks this year. He is ranked with Scott Crawford, who has signed with Lenior Rhyne, and Herb Cole of High Point who has also signed with the Catamounts, So, Western has landed two of the top three. While at Jordan-Matthew, Siler was named most valuable player on his team, All-State, All-Southern All-East, and All- Central Tarheel Conference for the fourth straight year. He started as the number one halfback in the Shrine Bowl game last December. In his four seasons as a starter for J-M, Siler rushed for 3,896 yards and 41 touchdowns. He has been named to the East team for the East-West All - Star game slated for August, Aside from football, Siler is also a fine track and basketball star. He runs the 100- dash in 9.9 seconds and was outstanding in the 220, All total, Siler has won 12 varsity letters from his high school. "Jerry is truly a super- athlete," said WCU defensive co-ordinator Don Denning who signed him. "He will definitely see a lot of action next season and needless to say he figures heavily in our offensive plans next season," ROOM**TW< WITH A .* OWLV// SPAGHETTI r*©*0-4M") SALAD **»•> Va ICE'COLO, Tennessee's roster boasts seven scholarship freshmen, four lettermen and three squad- men.
