  • 6 Tnursoay, Decemuer Z, 1971 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Cats maul Piedmont 123-53, await UNC-A THE CATS «% Twas twenty-three days before Christmas, And all through the campus, Not a creature was confident, Cause the firfal might flunk us. It's Christmas season. Translated for Cullowhee that 'means final exams (with visions that the sugar plums won't be on Thursday or Friday), and sound of FOWARD HO as you pull your jitney into Sylva-Waynesville wagontrain and head for home. Off you go, hoping that Santa Claus will leave WCU some new parking places on Ciirlstmas Eve. And hoping that David Smith gets eligible. The basketball Catamounts are off and running for the 1971-72 season. And right away, guess who's on the agenda. The Jungle will give you a hint: (Asheville - Biltmore). UNC—A vas for sure the top basKetball rivalry that Western had last season^ but after that lucking desperation basket last March they hav.-a new title- CULLOWHEE PUBLIC ENEMIES NUMBER ONE. And if you think they have forgotten, explain why a representative for them already has a block of seats for this Saturday's game for UNC—A students. They remember the bye-byes when they went to Kansas City last year instead of the Catamounts, and so do we. Why yesterday the Jungle met one of them on the street in Asheville. "Say aren't you from UNC-A," he asked. "vVhy sure/' he answered, "how did you know... because of my shining countenance, my brilliant mind, my impeccable dress or my winning look?" The Jungle replied, "Well actually no. I saw it on your class ring when you were picking your nose." So things are once again getting hot and heavy. It will get a little deeper as time goes on. Both ways. AJr-ady, one UNC—A comment is worth noting. It came from the top-~"I wish we could play Western Carolina every game of the season. . .they are a bunch of chokers." And while we're on the subject of ding-a-lings: how about the folks that chose the All=anything teams for football. Otis Mcintosh, Steve Williams and Jim Dougherty.were named to the All-District team Who could not have possibly overlooked them, but hovtTaDout all the other "All-" teams? Not a mention. They gotta be kiddin'. Perhaps they couldn't see WCU for the mountains. It's hard to do when you got your eyes closed. ***** And now as the final thing in this column, please take notice that this is the final CATS AND THE JUNGLE column. It is being buried. Lt. Gerrard has caught the one armed man and Wat Hopkins reported low K'jonie Ratings. So this is the funeral. THE CATS AND THE JUNGLE, having recently celebrated its first birthday, is suffering from old age and in the words of Mark Twain—"Consider well the proportion of things. It is better to be a young June bug than an old bird of paradise.*' There will however be a new column, by the same author, beginning next quarter. . .not on the sports pages.. . and with a new direction and name—JUNGLE'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT. Until then remember that the license plate on the hearse is probably^ U2, Three goals this season-20 wins, district championship, and UNC-A It is a busy week for the Catamounts. Last night they mauled Piedmont College's Lions 123-53t but tonight they are away In Jefferson City, Tennessee a- gainst a tough list of Carson- Newman Eagles. Then Saturday nieht the Cats will be geared for avenging the loss that turned the glamor of a 25-5 season sour last year. UNC-Asheville will be at Reid Gym here in Cullowhee for a 7:30 clash. The Catamounts were less than spectacular when they opened the season at Salisbury's civitan Classic, and consequently have a 2-1 record. Coach Jim Hartbarger's charges had problems on both the offensive and defensive boards in the tourney and their deep defense was lacKing con« siderably. In the opening round, the Cats wore cold from the floor but still managed to down Troy State 91-30. Catawba used the WCU baseline along with constant trips to the foul line as the key to an 87-80 victory over the Cats in the Championship. Despite the lack of luster in team performance, on the in~ dividual side Howard Winston and Rod Snyder drew praise from Hartbarger. Winston, a junior guard, totaled 48 points in the two games and connected on 20 of 33. Snyder, who is is a junior foward, kept the Cats competitive with Catawba as he came off the bench and pumped in long, high-arched jumpers* Last night the Catamounts helped educate a young crop of Piedmont players. Of the fifteen-man Piedmont roster, eight were freshmen and six were sophomores. The Lions were out-manned and out= classed, but they played hard the entire game. A hard thing to do when you ar^ down 40 or more points. Seven WCU players amassed double figures led by Winston who continued his hot pace by connecting on 8 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 from the foul line. In addition to Winston's game leading 20 point*, Albert Toomer and Wilson Scott had 16, Rod Snyder had 13, Glymph Childress had 13, Joe Wolfe had 12, and Henry Finch had 10. The remainder of the scoring was rounded out byClay Ward's 9, Reggie Kitchens' 8, Larry Grant's 4, and Rick Campbell's STEAK NIGHT COUNTRY CLUB DINING ROOM TUESDAY AND THURSDAY Evenings From 6 P.AA. to 9 P.M. ***** WESTERN BEEF ***** U.S. CHOICE 14 oz. Percentage-wise the Cats hit on 50.6 of the field goals they attempted and 73.3 from the foul line, as compared to 32.8 by Piedmont from the floor and 41.1 at the line. Prior to the Piedmont game Coach Hartbarger took time out to thank the Cans for last season's support, and, openly state three team goals the Cats are shooting for. Hartbarg«r said goal number one is to win 20 games this season. Goal number two was to win NAIA District Six. And goal number three was 'o beat UNC-A, The Catamounts will get three shots at their last goal and the first one is Saturday night. Western has now won 14 straight games in Roid Gym. The twenty games may come in any combination, but the district title is decided in the tournament in March, In order to qualify for the tournament, the Cats must have one of the top four records (against district competition) at the end of the regular season.
