And the limelight fell on WCU's Ben BaUey as he finished fifth in a field of 3"0 runners and received an NAIA All - American nomi- ation. The Catamount crosscountry team placed 13th against 62 schools from across the country, Terry Holms returned after falling early in the race to place 23rd, with Jerry Greene ONE OF THOSE MOMENT: cVii evor/j.vly just vi..'ns the ball. Wilson Scott (14) is on his way back down ?fter doing hi'3 part in putting the ball in the hoop. Then last Saturday, the 1971 cross country season at Western Carolina officially closed as Terry Helms and Steve Hill competed in the South Carolina AAU Meet. Helms took first place in the own division at 2 j:23.6 I a new course record. Hill placed seventh in the event. There was no team title. So, now its over and with a 45-12 record going into the Nationals, Coach Roger Thomas has indeed had another record breaking season, The Catamount harriers started the 1971 season with second place at the Stone Moun • tain Run in Atlanta, Georgia. From there, thsy went on to score three wins in a row in dual meets over Tennessee Tech, Citadel, and Davidson* In the last two events, Helms and Bailey, the "did Dust Twins" finished in a tie for first place. Then came the Tennessee Invitational Meet in Knoxville, Tennessee, and eighth place At this point, th3 Western Caro • lina runners had tallied a-i 18- 8 record, From Knoxville, the harriers went to Carrollton, Georgia and brought home first place trophy while adding 12 more teams to the list of the vanquished Appalachian State University proved to be the next team to collapse before the WCU cross country team in a dual meet here in Cullowhee, The score now stood 31-8„ The following Saturday, Coach Thomas' runners wont on the road to Raleigh for the North Carolina State MceU There they matched last year's finish and came in fourth place behind the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and North Carolina State. One week later, the Catamount harriers outpaced Western Kentucky to push their record to 42-11, On November 6, Western Carolina captured its fourth straight NAIA District 6Championship crown in Charleston, S.C.
