  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN October 29, 1970 3 Wofford alters gradeing system Spartanburg, S. C. -(LP.)- In a move designed to emphasize the positive aspects of learning, Wofford College has altered its grades of D and F beginning this faU, In place of these marks,, grades of 'Placement Credit only" (PL) and "No Credit" (NC) will be given. The grades A, B, and C will be maintained. Under the new system, the entire grade point ratio system, which has been used as a factor in determining whether a student is eligible for gradu~ aiion, will be abolished. The former system made it nearly impossible to offset D's and F?s with good grades. In lieu of the grade point ratio previously required,, candidates for degrees will be required to accumulate 120 semester hours Registrar has new hours New noon-time office hours for the Registrar's office have been established for the convenience of students and faculty members, it has been announced by Mrs. Harriet M, Parker, registrar. The schedule wUl include opening the office during the noon hour on all regular working days when classes are in session. Mrs. Parker said one full- time employee wUl be on duty from 12 noon until 1 p.m., an hour when the office, in the past, has been closed. During the fall quarter, the office staff also wUl be augmented by a student assistant on duty on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. During periods when the registrar's staff is involved in pre- registration, late registration, and class adjustment activities in the University Center, the office in Bird Administration Bldg. wiU not remain open during the noon hour. Dates on which these exceptions will occur are Nov. 4, 5, and 6 (for winter quarter pre-registration) and January 6, 7, 8, and 11 (for late registration and course adjustments,) worth of credit with grades of C or better in order to graduate. Beginning this fall, any student making a PL in a course during the regular semester wUl receive no semester hours toward the needed 120 for grad - uation, but wUl complete the particular requirement if the course is required for graduation, Students earning an NC in one of these courses will receive no semester hours of creditand no completion of the satisfaction of the requirement These required courses wUl have to be repeated until at least a grade of PL is earned. If the course is an elective coarse, there is no requirement to repeat the course and some other course may be taken to earn the necessary semester hours. Dean of the College. Joe M. new system is not lowering the standards at the coUege. "If the new grading system is honestly and stringenUy applied, as I have every reason to believe it wUl be, the effect should be that it wUl improve learning and therefore standirds." Language lab in basement The language lab at Western Carolina is now housed in the basement of McKee. This relocation from the first floor of McKee was arranged because the room that it occupied was needed for classroom space. A temporary tape system is being used. It is a remote control wireless program in which four different language lessons can be transmitted at one time. The casette player system that the school wanted to install was not approved by the state. This method would enable the student to control his particular lesson. He could stop the tape or turn it back whenever he wished. During the day, the hours a student may use the language lab are scheduled according to his language course. From 6:00 to 9:00 pm, the lab is open on a first come-first served basis.
