This is a fantastically rich and beautiful work--a contemporary religious statement which casts ancient wisdoms into new forms. The many pictures are wonderful too In fact, the library has many books available for those of you who wish to explore traditional American Indian consciousness. Black Elk Speaks (E 90 B82 A3 1961) is the life story of a holy man of the Oglala Sioux as told to poet John G Neihardt. It contains his vision of the flowering of the sacred tree and much else to learn from In The Sacred Pipe (E 00 .03 B5) Black Elk explains the symbolism of the ritual of the sacred pipe which is central to so many Plains Indian tribes. In Rolling Thunder (E90 R74 B69). researcher Doug Boyd describes t he personal ity , philosophy, and healing methods medicine man. Another good book is Ten Grandmothers, by Alice Marriott (E99. K5 M36). an anthrophologist who has reconstructed the life stories of three words The narrative is very well done and of special interest since the mam character is a woman. The Ten Grandmothers are the sacred bundles of the Kiowa Nation. Gladys Reichard, anthropologist and weaver, has written several deep works on Navajo life, art and thought. Her Dezba: Woman of the Desert (E 99 N3 R34 1971), is a narrative account weaver/matriarch. Sometimes works of fiction contain more truth than many works of scholarship. Such are the Indian novels of Frank Waters The Man Who Killed the Deer (PS 3545 A82 M3) and Woman at Otowi Crossing (PS 3545 A82 W6) are my favorites. I could really go on and on naming good books. However, just to balance the past with the present, I will mention God is Red, by Vine Deloria (BL 2776 D44 1973). Deloria, author, activist, and spokesperson for AIM, contrasts traditional Native American religious consciousness with Christianity. One observation he makes in passing is that white people tend to get bogged down with the romance of the Indian past and refuse to notice that Indian peoples everywhere are fighting to maintain their identity as Indians in a society which is attempting to assimilate or eliminate them, and that Indian people are still trying to reach their white brothers and sisters with the message of the Whole Earth, the Medicine Wheel and the Relatedness of life. If you wish to avoid the error of .viewing Indians as colorful replicas of America's past, look up Akwesasne Notes, a very fine periodical publication put out by the Mohawk Nation for all •Native and Natural People" (on the shelf in the Student Lounge of the library, back issues on microfilm). This journal is the very best source for what is happening with native peoples NOW. Excellent, up-to-date coverage of the Indian activist movement, government policy, news of native peoples all over North and South America (if you are not aware of what is happening to Indians in Brazil, you should be), plus poetry, fiction, philosophical essays, book reviews, letters, resources, and put fine graphics. Take Cornelia's advice; on your sweaters and visit library. There are whole worlds to discover. Marina Bokelman Documents Assistant Hunter Library Contact FOR SALE!
