  • 2 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN October 29,1970 WOMiN OF WCU won't hava to make the old laundry run after this quarter. Washers and dryers (cheaper than the nearest laundramat) will bo Installed in Helder and Leatherwood. Scott Hill women are encouragad to use those facilities until the wiring in that building is altered to provide for this service., Educational policy change at Simpson College Indianola, Ia.-(LP.)- A major change in educational policy at Simpson College will go into effect with the current academic year. Involved in the change: the general education require- ments or academic "core" of the college program. Under the new program, Simpson will no longer require a common core of studies for all students. Instead, each student will be placed in a counseling relationship with a faculty advisor, where a pro- gram suited to his individual New nursery opens on campus Recently a new nursery school opened in the campus area. Located at St David's Canterbury House in Speedwell, the nursery is open 9:00 thru 12:00 Tuesdays and Fridays. Anyone connected with the University in any way is able to use the center. The center is known as Day Care Center. Any youths be tween the ages of 12 months and 5 years are admitted. The Day Care Center is being sponsored by a branch of the Newcomers Club, the child study group. This group is open to any member of the Newcomers group with smaU chUdren. After a year of speakers and study the group decided that this type facUtiy was needed in the Cullowhee area and took a positive step in that direction. The nursery is non-educational. The children entertain themselves by drawing, coloring, working puzzles, etc. Be- tween 8 to 18 children have shown up to be cared for during the time that the school has been open. This is the only such school in the area as far as the chUd study group knows. The Methodist Church has a kindergarten, but, it is for older children. The University Center Board is presently operating a baby- sitting service at night, but has nothing for daytime care. Prices for this service atthe Day Care Center are on a graded scale. Prices are: for one child, 50d for the first hour and 35£ for every hour after; for two chUdren the price is 75(5 for the first hour and 50C each hour after; and for three chUdren $1.00 for the first hour and 75£ after the first Half hours are charged where the situation dictates rather than the full hour. The center plans to open more than two days per week when funds become available. needs will be worked out "Great stress wUl be placed," according to Dr. Waller B. Weiser, Dean of Academic Affairs "on the academic counseling function through which the student and his counselor will structure an academic program that reflects the students academic and personal goals." Guidelines to maintain the standards under which a Simpson College degree is granted wUl, of course, stUl be necessary. In addition to the approval of his program by the advisor and dean, a student must satisfactorUy complete 35 courses with a 2.00 cumulative grade point average (where "straight A98 equals 4.00). To guarantee that students wUl still sample the broad variety of experiences typical of a liberal arts education, there wUl be guidelines so that no more than 12 courses may be taken within a major department (history, for example) and no more than_24 in the academic division of the major area (social sciences). "In re-examining our educational goalSi.it has become clear that no one discipline or pattern of study is necessarily the single best approach to becoming a liberally educated person. Individual self-development and self-realization should be the focal point of humanizing liberal arts,'* Dean Wiser commented. sWt i Jf. f £$& 0e^Cejt^ COURT HILL INN 1 o^ c? -4 \_/above tjte courthouse in syxva 0v f / i%i*flf phone 7o4/586-448* (tf#% »b, Steak 'n Salad Room Where dining is infinitely mpre than merely eating COURT HIU.INN {VMtWM AIR CONDITIONED ^ y,gfi\ < LUXURIOUS ROOMS STEAK "N SALAD ROOM MON.-FRI.: 6-9 P.M. F, Reinhard, the order for the machines has been sent and delivery will be made within six weeks. Upon arrival, the ten washers and eight dryers will be distributed equally between the two dorms. The machines will be coin operated, 15<! per wisher and 10(! per dryer. Arguing against the possible threat to private enterprises, Pre-registration schedule set Following is an announcement of pre-registration for winter quarter, 1971. November 2-6: Consult advisors by appointment and secure approval of the courses you have selected. November 4-6: Submit approved Course Request Form to Registrar's Staff, Grandroom, University Center - 8:30 a.m. = 4:30 p.m. The proposed course offering list and Coarse Request Forms wUl be available Friday, Oct. 30 at the main lobby, University Center - Foyer, Bird Administration BuUding and Departmental Offices. Reinhard feels the University's "primary obligation" istoprovide these conveniences to the students, regardless of local merchant competition. Such facilities wUl not, however, be immediately available in other dorms on campus. The high rise dorm was never wired or equipped with drains to accommodate laundry facUities, a lack of insight in the construction of a relatively new hall. Reinhard stresses, however, that Dr. Pow has researched the cost of installing such equipment; and, if the university can afford it, the high rise will eventually be equipped with laundry facilities. Reinhard also reveals that "the two residence haUs now under construction have been buUt without hookups for laun dry machines; although in the last two weeks these plans have been changed to include the necessary hookups so that when they open, they wUl have washers." Contending that such facilities need be included in all dormitory structural plans, Reinhard hopes to be able to install at least a couple of washers on each existing dorm hall sometime in the future. The washers and dryers have been purchased from the laundry fund and proceeds from the machines will be placed back into the fund, DEAN DO'.'GLAS DAVIS, AN UNUSUAL BEAUTY, exhibits those qualities necessary when one expects to win an unusual beauty pageant Womanless beauty pageant to be held at Hoey The most unusual beauty pageant to take place on this campus will be held on November 12 at 7:30 in Hoey Auditorium. The Pageant is the Miss Thanksgiving "Womanless" Pageant sponsored by the brothers of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. The admission to this event is canned food, toys, or any amount of money. Proceeds from this pageant will go to help needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Any group who would like to enter a "Miss" to represent them can do so by contacting Joe Allen, 153 Benton, by November 2.
