Question answered THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN October 29, 1970 7 my head opinion - not knowing how It would be composed.' with the University to determine that the University needs ire given proper priority Li the state budget," .FROM Page 6 ways." The possibilities should be explored for both volunteers and those on a paid basis. The University could be utilized in research projects and planning projects - eg. health. McCOY - We could work with the University community and have them come to Commissioner meetings to go over the county problems with the Commissioners and work with them to solve these problems. PAINTER - Very much soc There has been a feasibUity study concerning the possibUity of a golf course accessible to faculty and students. Open board meetings for everyone including the faculty and students could be a great use of the resources of the University community. We may arrange to have night sessions for the board so that more people might be able to attend. PELL- "I have no ideas as to how they could be utilized off-hand. This should be worked out between the people of the county and the University. DILLARD - (the following statements answer both questions 2 and 3) "I have several ideas for County-University co-operation. We at the County level have of course benefitted greatly by the tremendous amount of work done for our Airport Commission by Dr. Flynn as Chairman, Dr. North and Mr. Lyday and for our Recreation Commission by Dr. Constantz as Chairman. "Dr. Pow has instituted joint meetings of County Commissioners and University Ad= mjjiistrators, This Is an ex ceUent and productive move not previously tried. "I would suggest that study and consideration be given to some of the following ideas. 1. PossibUity of various night classes for University credit. There are many local people who would be interested in such a program. 2. More publicity in the local news media of cultural programs open to the public at WCU. 3. A wider use of WCU facilities and more leeway for colleie professors to do outside work. 4. We County Commissioners have met frequently with University officials in recent months. Why not meet with representatives of Student Government and student publications on a give and take basis and exchange ideas. I think it would be an excellent idea and suggest that these people set up such a meeting." STATE GOVERNMENT The WESTERN CAROLINIAN has interviewed three of the four candidates running for the two offices of the State Legislature in order to g'.ve the voters an Idea of how these men stand on oanicalar issues We regret that Mr. Charles Taylor was not available for Interview. Those candidates running for the State Senate are Mr. Herman West - incumbent Republican, and Mr. Dan Killian - Democrat, The two candidates running for the State House are Mr. Charles Taylor - incumbent Republican, and Mr. John Smart - Democrat, The questions and answers follow. 1. How would you go about helping Western Carolina Un iversity to get its fair share per student of state appropria ■ WEST- "The key to getting appropriations is to have men in the legislature who have seniority, experience, and friends who are leading legislators," KILLIAN - Did not answer this question. SM ART - "I -would make every effort I could- to be placed on an appropriations committee so I would have some influence in laying the groundwork, I would also want to talk to school officials to determine their priorities. I would work actively 2. What is your reaction to the Scranton Commission Report on Campus Unrest? WEST- "Although I'm not completely familar with the Scranton Report, what I have read leads me to believe that it was a whitewash to some degree. I wasn't too impressed with the accuracy or with the sincerity of it." KILLIAN- I havent studied this thoroughly - wouldn't be able to answer that, SMART - "I have not had an opportunity to read this report in depth other than scanty news stories," 3. Do you favor consolidation of higher education in N. C under the direction of a single board? WEST - "At this time I would not favor centralization. Since I'm from WNC I favor our indep- ent board," KILLIAN - "N>, I do not." SMART - "I can sec disadvantages and advantages in this.. I would believe that I would oppose this. This is off the top of 4. What results have been achieved by the North Carolina Air Pollution Control Division of the Department of Water and Air Resources concerning poUutlon In WNC If none, what can be done9 WEST- "There has been very little progress made, if any - a lot of talk, but little progress," The only way anything can be done is through co-operation between Federal, State, and Lc cal governments and the Industries that are polluting the streams and the air. It will require a lot of capital and the industries have a tremendous responsibility to stop it because they're causing it, KILLIAN - There has been 10 million dollars requested for this, it has high priority. Asheville and Henderson have an Air Pollution District. SMART - "I believe that the law which established the Board has the authority to control pollution. I think because we did go for a long period of time without this Board that they must move slowly. To really find out how effective the Board can be it must be given more time. I believe It Is going in the right direction," INTERVIEWS BY DENISE S SCHICKEL WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE DEMOCRAT PARTY, YOU THINK OF LEADERSHIP- Congressman Roy A.
