  • Page 8 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, April 9,1970 Complaints of campus movies investigated Many students and faculty of Western Carolina University have recently complained about the quality of movies provided for them by the University Center. A recommendation was passed at mid-session conference to increase the student activity fee by two dollars in order to get better and more popular films on campus. The students, in a referendum several weeks ago supported this recommendation by voting to add two dollars to their fees for this purpose. In an interview with Baxter Wood, Director of the University Center, he stated, "I guarantee that you will not find better 16mm films on any campus in the United States." Mr. Wood, who is in charge of ordering and showing the films in Hoey Auditorium said that under the present program we recieve the best films possible. Mr. Wood selects a variety of films chosen from the categories that recieve the most attendance. The present film service is under the Recreational Pro- | Don't "SKIP" The Chance To Order Your 1 OFFICIAL CLASS RING!! gram of the University Center and is totally self-supporting. Expenses, the film cost, the projectionist, etc., come out of the 25c admission charge. Even then, a small profit Is realized which, is used to buy and repair color television sets and other recreational services. Part of the profit, along with the profits of the billard room, goes to pay the student workers at the University Center. Taylor Huskins, Dean of Student Affairs, who was in charge of Hoey Films for 13 years, stated that the 16mm films are not available for release until they are at leas: twelve months old and many are not released for several years. For this reason. It Is difficult, if not impossible, to get new films, Mr. Wood stated that he orders films as soon as the date of release arrives. Both Mr. Wood and Mr. Huskins were of the opinion that the Student Senate recommendation which lacks only Trustee approval to become policy, would not be approved- They felt that the rising costs of tuition next year would prevent the Board of Trustees from raising the fees any more than is absolutely necessary. Another suggestion for higher quality films is to change from the 16mm to the 35mm movies. In doing this, the school would be able to order first -run films, more or less in the same way as commercial theatres doi However, the films woiild be considerably more expensive to rent and show. Also, the Univ versity, a State supported sch ool, would be competing against private enterprise, which could conclevably end in the law courts, The only solution to this problem would be not to charge admission and toai^w only siudeuts and faculty, along with guests, to attend. This would exclude many Cullowhee residents from their nearest movie facility, One faculty member observed, "It seems the present program appears to be inadequate only in that all students and faculty are not pleased with the quality of all the movies whown. I feol sorry for flax- I ter Wood if he has to satisfy : every student on campus.."
