  • Page 6 WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, October 23,1969 For All The Marbles, 6-0 Catamounts Battle 3rd Ranked Lenoir Rhyne Saturday at 2p.m. Watch These Cats Western Carolina meets Lenoir Rhyne Saturday afternoon for Homecoming for all the marbles-=a possible undefeated season, national small college ranking, and a possible NAIA championship playoff bid. Both Coach Bob Waters'Catamounts and Coach Hanley Painter's Bears carry 5-0 records into the 2 p. m. contest Western Carolina marched for a record-high 711 yards total offense last Saturday to down Emory & Henry 38-24, while Lenoir Rhyne easily defeated Guilford 29-6. Lenoir Rhyne, which has won 24 of 32 previous meetings with WCU, was ranked third in toe NAIA football poll and 9th in the Associated Press small college poll last week. Western Carolina, which is averaging 458 yards total offense, including 294 yards passing and 164 yards rushing, was ranked 20the in the NAIA poll last week. "Lenoir Rhyne is always tough, but this season they're particularly strong and quick," says WCU head coach Bob Waters. "The Bears have a tremendous offense that does everything well, but their strongest point is the defensive line," Waters says. "I'm not overrating LR one bit when I say we'll have to give a 100 per cent effort to beat them," Waters says. The Catamounts have defeated Lenoir Rhyne only once since 1955 by 14-13 in 1964. Last year toe Bears powerful single-wing offense, led by tailback Mike McRee, scoreu on its first three offensive series to take a 20=6 first quarter lead, and toe Bears went on to win 59-27. McRee, a 5=foot-ll, 188-pound junior, scored on touchdown runs of 63, 1 and 2 yards and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass. Wingback Toby Morgan, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior, scored TDs on a 30-yard run and a 37-yard pass in that game, as LR rolled for 388 yards rushing and 122 yards passing. This season, Western Carolina's multiple offense, led by senior quarterback Don Dalton, has put on an offensive show to rival Lenoir Rhyne. Dalton has passed for 1407 yards and five touchdowns in five games. The 6-foot-l, 195- pound All-America candidate passed for 433 yards last Saturday to set WCU records for passing and total offense. Dalton is averaging 281 yards total offense, more than 50 yards a game ahead of toe pace set by WCU All-America Jim Williams in 1966. Williams passed for 2295 yards that season. Western Carolina's aerial offense, which is averaging more than 30 passes a game, has performed at record paces so far in passing, total offense, and scoring. But toe Cats' defense, led by senior linebacker Mike Biggerstaff, has held toe opposition to 14.2 points a game. Last season WCU's opponents averaged 211 yards passing. This season, the Cats' defense has intercepted 11 passes and recovered 15 fumbles and allowed 157 yards a game passing.
