Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, February 9, 1967 CAROLINIAN panthers Put Down Cats SPORTS SECTION Cat Tracks By DON LUCAS, Sports Editor TOURNAMENT ACTION RAPIDLY APPROACHING With only six games remaining to be played, what are the Cats chances in the coming Carolinas Conference tournament? This is the question being asked around campus, in the local barber shops, and probably drifting in the minds of the townspeople of Asheville. A lot depends upon the Cats showing in the tournament, The object of the regular season is to determine berths and seeding in the annual tournament held in Lexington, and six victories by me Cats would give Western excellent seeding in this year's event. Injuries, breaks—they both play an important role in the outcome of games. So far this season Western has played without captain Bob Thompson in over half its contests. Thompson, a team leader and fine rebounder , has suffered from a year-old knee injury and is playing with it heavily taped in every game. Henry Logan, Western's superstar, missed three games midway through the season due to an injury and after he returned to action was slowed far below his usual pace. His performances will play a big role in the Cats' chances, since toe offense is built around his fast, aggressive pace. Breaks will always help determine the winner„ A referee's decision, a missed foul shot, a timely violation—all could be important factors in a tight ballgame and a tight race. The Carolinas Conference could be just such a race. On a given night, any team in this conference is capable of knocking off another team. This has been proven time after time. The team that can put together three good games, with timely breaks, will more than likely be me Carolinas Conference Champion. SPRING JUST AHOUND THE CORNER Although coaches Gudger and Ray haven't packed up the basketballs yet, spring sports are almost here. Ron Blackburn, head baseball coach, is looking forward to a fine season as twelve lettermen return from last year's second place team. Pitchers and catchers have already begun workouts, and toe remainder of me squad will be added to the workouts in the near future. Danny Jones, Joe Fraser, Itob Newton, Bob Hicks, Jim Bullins, Tim Newsome, Roddy Edwards, and 'Red' Thompson are a few of the returning lettermen Blackburn is counting heavily on. Coach D. J. McKevlin is anxiously awaiting the start of the tennis season, although bad weather has forced closing of the tennis courts until spring quarter. Herb Bolick, Bruce Loftin, and Nick Kale are three lettermen who McKevlin expects to carry the load this year. Loftin and Kale are co-captains. Cats To Host Quakers In Sat. Action By DOUG HOWARD This Saturday night me Cata= mounts play host to me league- leading Guilford College Quak= ers. Guilford has a 11-1 con= ference record and appears to be me team to beat in the tournament coming up March 1-4 in Lexington. The Quakers are one of me best all around clubs in me conference, although mey too have their own super star. Center Bob Kauffman who stands 6-8 is their leading scorer and rebounder. He is presently averaging 22 points and 15.6 rebounds per game. He was a unanimous choice for me all-conference team last year. Last year me Cats beat Guilford in Death Valley, 99-82, but this year the Quakers are fielding a more mature ball club. Western has given me league leaders trouble at home mis season, and me Reid Gym blues should give me Cats a great advantage. Henry Logan will still be the man to watch for the Cats. Guilford's big men may try and clog me middle, forcing me Cats to shoot from the outside. If this happens, McConnell, Logan, and Gilbert will be the men taking me shots. If me Catamounts can dominate me backboards and improve their shooting, Guilford may well be one of me many to fall In Reid gym. If bom of these areas of me Cats' game do improve, maybe Jerry Steele will not be smiling like Bobby Vaughn. THE TENNIS TEAM MEETING SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY HAS BEEN CHANGED TO TONIGHT, 6:30, REYNOLDS PARLOR. WAYNEWOOD GROCERY Would Like To Welcome All WCC Students LESS THAN DISCOUNT PRICES ON ALL PACKAGE GOODS Drugs And Cosmetic Supplies We Give Family Stamps Weekend Special 35< Carton Soft Drinks Balsam Road Waynesville Hot Shooting, Tough Defense Provide The Cats' Demise Here CULLOWHEE: The cellar- dwelling High Point Panthers put together torrid shooting and a tough zone to upend me Western Carolina Catamounts here last night, 90-76. The Panthers, with 15=point plus performances from four starters, rolled up a 48-27 half time lead andthen coasted home to victory, while the Cats experienced one of me coldest shooting exhibitions in me first half ever witness in Reid gym. Eugene Littles paced me High Point attack with 22 points, followed by Chris Lindsay with 20, Jim Colbert with 18, and Jim Pike with 15. Bill McDermott, the other starter, grabbed 12 rebounds, to team with Pike's 14 and me Panthers controlled me boards, also. Henry Logan, me Asheville flash, led aU scorers with 33 points, but he was cold throughout me first half and only tallied eight points during me first twenty minutes. Gene McConnell and Greg Whitman slipped in 15 and 13 points respectively for the Cats. Whitman led me rebounding for me Cats with 12. The Panthers now own a 3-9 conference mark and must win four of their next five conference games to earn a birth in me conference tournament March 1-4. Western now holds a 7-6 remaining before me tournament, Guilford invades Reid gym mis Saturday, riding high at me top of the Carolinas Conference standings. Kappa AlphaTakesCampus Championship In Basketball Kappa Alpha Order nipped 1st and 2nd Reynolds Norm in overtime, 45-43, Tuesday night to win the All-campus tournament in intramural bas= ketball. The game was nip and tuck all me way, and it was not until Rob Smith sank a 15-foot jump shot with two seconds left in me overtime period mat the outcome was decided. Kappa Alpha led at me half 19-18, and jumped to as much as a nine point lead in me early going of me last half. The Reynolds five, however, battled back to take a two point advantage at 43 - 41 with 12 seconds remaining in me game, but Phil Woodruff, a 5-10 guard dumped in me tying tallies for the fraternity men to send me game into overtime. Smith's goal was me only score in me overtime period, as Kappa Alpha gained possession with 1:12 seconds left in the overtime and stalled until Smith took his shot at me buzzer. Woodruff and Smith paced Kappa Alpha's attack, while Red Thompson led Reynolds with 18 points. » KAPPA ALfHA ORDEK, ALL-CAMPUS CHAMPIONS| Fishing Season Opens April 1st, Rules Listed Lamar It is a long time until April 1, 1967, but many sportsmen may be wondering what license are required for fishing inWest- ern North Carolina and what laws apply to fishing.
