  • Page 2 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, May 11,1967 A Look At Spring Festival Week; Beauty And Entertainment Abound By GRADY COOPER Western Carolina's second annual Spring Festival Week ended last Saturday night on a successful note as more than 200 students attended a formal dance in Reid Gymnasium at which the 1967 May Queen was crowned. Jane Smith, a home economics major from Mocksville, was presented along with her Maid of Honor, Vlckl Jackson of Canton, and the other members of her court, The other members of the court were Pat Braswell of Monroe, Rosemary Parker of High Point, Janice McLaughlin of Seneca, S.C., Lynn Self of movie. The real success, however, was having its prim'er performance nearby in Stillwell. The Littly Theatre of Cullowhee opened its six-performance, spring quarter production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" on the stage in the Little Theatre auditorium. Researved seating for the six performances was sold out tso weeks before opening night, but persons w*io wished to see the production were allowed to attend dress rehearsals, and standing room only audiences were allowed during the entire run. Wednesday night saw the presentation of the "Sing Out" Talent Competition at the Woodland Stage. Swveral groups, most representing either fraternities or sororities, parti- Thursday night. Presenting a repetoire of the songs which have made them famous, the groups convinced most of the sceptics present at the concert that country and western music is not as dead as some would have them believe. Friday night was "Hell Night," at least so ;'ar as those attending the informal dance in Brown cafeteria were concerned. Spring Festival Week began on Momday, May 1, when the Western Carolina Concert Choir presented "A German Requiem" by Brahms In the Woodland Stage. On Tuesday night, the Spring Festival Planning Committee and the Interfaith Council co- sponsored a "BavarianCellar" coffee-house In the basement of the Student Union. The Interfaith Council provided the free refreshments, and the Planning Committee provided the entertainment in the form of Don Turner, a freshman folk singer. This also turned out to ba a disappointment, again as a result of poor attendance. Later that night a horror movie, "Dracula, Prince of darkness," was presented In Hoey Auditorium. A recently released production, the movie gave WCC students an advance look at a movie which will soon be shown at local theatres. On Saturday morning, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity - TUESDAY NIGHT Queen and her court were held that afternoon at the Woodland Stage. That night the formal crowning of the May Queen by Dr. Paul A. Reid, president of the college, was held at a formal dance in Reid Gym,, Wes Boxter and his orchestra, from Atlanta, Ga., provided music for the evening. The crowning of the May Queen formally concluded the week's activities. At the Student Senate meeting VICKI JACKSON Monday night the Senators praised the efforts of this year's Spring Festival Planning Comm'ttee but criticized the poor support and attendance of the students. Barry Steagall, outgoing Senate President, stated that "a lot of time, money, and effort had been put into it (Spring Festival Week), and there has been very little response from the students. This appeared to be the consensus of the Senate as well as that of most of the students concerned with the presentation of Spring Festival. Spring Festival Week 1967 was considered a great improvement over last year, but it was faced with the same problem—student participation and attendance. Tom P-,tts, newly elected President of Men's House Government, and Jane Cabe were co=chairmen of Ihe Spring festival Planning Committee. "HELL NIGHT," INFORMAL Women's Fraternity. Honorable mention went to Sigma Kappa Sorotity and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. ' Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and the Foggy Mountain Boys, a nationally famous bluegrass band, presented a well-attended. concert in Reid Gymnasium DANCE— FRIDAY NIGHT sponsored the Cullowhee Olympics at which campus groups competed for awards in various "Olympic-style" e- vents.
