  • Tuesday, January 24, 1967 Blackburn Announces Baseball Practice Western Carolina Coach, Ron Black burn, has several announcements concerning prospective players and the opening of practice. First, all freshmen candidates must have passed a total of 24 hours of academic work during Fall and Winter Quarters to be eligible. All upperclassmen must have pas- sed 36 hours in the preceding three quarters. Secondly, all tryouts for the varsity squad start assemblying practice gear—clothing, shoes, gloves, etc. Candidates will have to provide their own gear until the cutdown is made. After the cutdown, equipment will be provided by the athletic department. Third, all prospects should start a conditioning program immediately so as to report in good physical condition. Last, but most important, practice will tentatively begin Feb. 6 for all pitchers and catchers with the remainder of the squad reporting later in the week. An official announcement as to the start of practice will be made in the near future. Consult the Western Carolinian and the bulletin board in the foyer of Reid Gymnasium for the exact date as weather will be a determining factor. The Catamounts, second in the Carolinas Conference standing last season, will play a 26 game schedule this year opening with Erskine College, March 10. Predator Calls Proven Partly Effective Every outdoorsman has read advertisements for predator calls and speculated on the validity of the advertisement and the effect of the product Being a hunter, I was curious to know if I possessed the ability to "talk" to a fox or a bobcat. I had read articles in outdoor magazines a- bout the sport and thrill involved. My chance at predator calling came with a borrowed call and a new camouflage suit. I decided to test my ability in a rural farming section of Transylvania County in Western North Carolina, Foxes are abundant in the fields and woods along the .French Broad River and 1 definately wanted to try the art of predator calling in a likely place, I chose a broom sage hill that is ventilated with old groundhog holes and climbed a small tree on the very top of the hill. The foxes use the old groundhog holes for dens and the broom sage is a hiding place for rabbits. What more could a fox ask. I made myself as comfortable as possible and began making the sounds of a dying rabbit with the call. The cry should be loud at first and gradually decrease to a whisper and then stop. I was just beginning my second series of calls when a sparrowhawk lit on a limb no more than ten feet over my head. 1 continued calling and the hawk decided I was not a dying rabbit and flew away. I called for two minutes every ten or fifteen minutes and repeated this process for almost an hour. ,My sounds of agony brought iresults, but the fox was not easily fooled. It had circled the hill and followed my tracks to the top of the hill. He didn't see me until I began to raise my rifle. The fox immediately dashed over the edge of the hill and out of sight. I didn't kill the fox, but I did get him THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Latest Intramural Action BASKETBALL By Fred Adcock On Monday, Jan. 16, 1967, on court #1, at 7:00, 3rd Reynolds South defeated 3rd Reynolds in a close game by a score of 53-50. This new type of hunting is inexpensive and very enjoyable. All that is necessary is a call and a camouflage suit Both can be had for approximately ten dollars. The predators can be shot with rifle, bow or a camera. Predator calling is a good sport for a college student since it is inexpensive and almost every land owner will permit hunting. The season is open the entire year, but a license is required. WATER POLO By Steve Loflin Kappa Alpha and Theta Xi started the winter season of water polo games off to a fine beginning. Kappa Alpha led at the half by 8 points and continued on to defeat Theta Xi by 17 to 4 at the final whistle. Tom Halgrim and P, D. Walden were the leading scorers for K A with 8 and6 points respectively. Tau Kappa Epsilon easily beat Delta Sigma Phi in their meeting with a final score of 19-4. TKE's half time score was the usual 8 points. The second half had the fatal results with 11 points bringing out the stronger team. Buz Cashion was one of the leading scorers for TKE. One of best water polo was between 1st Buchanan and 1st and 2nd Robertson. First and 2nd Robertson had only five players and no team members to choose from to compete. First and 2nd Robertson scored three points in the first half and three more in the second while 1st Buchanan could only put two points up in the entire game. C. J. Cody and Ric Smith both got three points a- piece for Robertson. Kappa Alpha came back the next week to play Pi Kappa Phi for a fairly unexciting ballgame by taking the lead early in the game of 8 points. KA held that lead and went on to score 11 more points in the second half to defeat Pi Kappa Phi by 19 to 2, P. D, Walden had 8 points and Steve Loflin 6 points while BillMuller got the only score for Pi Kappa Phi. Alpha Phi Omega and 1st and 2nd Madison converged upon each other with ahappy note for APO. They took a strong lead with 8 points for the half and truly dunked Madison in the second half with 18 points on the scoreboard. The final score was 23-4 with Tom Pittman, Bob Frickhoeffer, and David Campbell being the leaders for APO. In K.A.'s third game of the season against A. P. O, Tom Hal- grim carried most of the burden in the 1st half for K.A. with five points and two points more in the 2nd half. The total half time score was K.A. eight point and A.P.O. none. The second half was different for A.P.O. with high spirited David Campell entering. A. P,0. came back with six points but was not enough to hold K.A. back who finished the game by winning 12 to 6. The final game this week between 1st and 2nd Madison and Pi Kappa Phi has been the closest so far. Pi Kappa Phi ran up a fine five points in the 1st half with different individuals scoring. After five minutes intermission between halves Madison came back very strong by tieing the score in less than two minutes of the 2nd half, From that time on there was a see-saw battle of two point scores with Madison coming out on top with a final score of 12 to 11. Ken Parker and Craig Fogleman were high scorers for Madison. Page 7 Durante Suspended For Year Catawba's Dwight Durante has been suspended from school for the duration of the year. Durante will be allowed to take fall semester exams. Catawba Coach, Sam Moir, stated that Durante's suspension was due to "An accumulation of Incidences." The final incident was the fact that Durante was called down on a loud dormitory situation and was referred to a student disciplinary board. Durante failed to appear at his hearing and he was suspended for one semester by the board. Durante was the Carolinas Conference's leading scorer last year with a game average of 30.5 points. Durante's next year's eligibility will depend on whether he attends summer school, if he does not attend school this summer he will not be eligible for competion next year. Tom St. Clair will take the place of Durante for the remainder of the season. The loss of Catawba's All- Conference super star could make an outstanding difference in the conference race.
