JSCHULMAN'S of Sylvd Hitting Takes Spotlight As Cats Take Three By Steve White The Catamount baseball team wound up a successful road trip Monday afternoon in Wilson by splitting a doubleheader with Atlantic Christian College. Western Carolina, sporting a 6-2 record, plays host to Appalachian State in single games today and Saturday afternoon. Coach Ron Blackburn's Cats won their fourth and fifth straight games Saturday over Catawba and ran the victory streak to six by taking the opening game over ACC. However, the Catamounts blew a four-run lead in the second game and lost in extra innings to end the win skein. The Cats exhibited their first show of power in the 4-2 and 7- 3 victories over Catawba at Salisbury. Finding the short fences to their liking, three Catamounts blasted home runs. Danny Jones started Western on its way in the first game with a 350-foot homer. DANNY JONES' big bat was a main factor in the Catamounts' successful road trip. Western's Glenn Ivle and Catawba's Dean Yearick then stttled down In a pitchers' duel. The Cats rallied in the sixth on Joe Fraser's walk and stolen base; an error; and an attempted pick off play which backfired, sending Fraser home with the tying run. Third baseman Bob Maska then drilled a 360-foot homer which wrote the final score at 4-2. Catawba drew first blood in the second tilt. A single, a stolen base, and another single gave the Tribe a 1-0 margin. Western was not to be denied for long as Bob Maska led off the second with a double. Jerry Hicks, left- fielder, walked and first baseman Rob Newton followed with a double to score Maska and tie it up. Catcher Bobby Hicks sacrificed in brother Jerry and Jim Bullins, starting pitcher, singled in Newton to make it 3-1. The Indians came back to score single runs In the third and fourth to make It close. The Cats' bats boomed again in the seventh inning to put It out of reach. Danny Jones, Western's flashy shortstop, led off with a booming triple. Jerry Hicks followed two batters later with a homer over the leftfield wall to make It 7-3. Bullins, pitching good in spots, got in a jam in the sixth and was relieved by Freshman righthander Tim Newsom. Making his first collegiate debut, Newsom was sharp in a two-inning stint. It was a cold, windy afternoon in Wilson but the weather failed to bother Catamount ace righthander Roddey Edwards. The Gastonia junior allowed Atlanta Christian only four hits and struck out seven. The Cats started off like they were going to rout the Bulldogs. Joe Fraser doubled and Rob Newton singled. A double steal brought in Fraser. Another double steal attempt proved costly to the Cats as Newton severely injured his knee sliding into home. ACC came back in its half of the first to tie it up. Western came alive in the seventh to pull it out. Ken Hyde, rightfielder, hit a shot into left for a double. Cecil Caldwell's double moved him to third. Bobby Hicks' line drive was errored by the Bulldog third sacker and Hyde scored the winning run. In the last game of the road trip, Roddey Edwards led «f* with a single and Hyde doubled him in to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. It was 2-0 after the fourth when Danny Jones' triple and Jim Klmbrell's run- scoring grounder gave the Cats another. Two more runs came across in the sixth when Hyde got on via an error; Jones' second triple; and Kimbrell'e sacrifice. With the game on ice, the Catamounts visioned taking home a seven-game winning streak. Rod Rogers, who had pitched superb ball for six innings, striking out 10, suddenly could not find the plate and loaded the bases. Glen Ivie was called in to bail out Rogers, but he also had control problems and walked in a pair. A two-base throwing error allowed ACC to tie it up and send the game into extra innings. The Bulldogs then won it to the ninth when they parlayed a hit, error, walk and squeeze play. The Catamounts are now 5-1 ia the Carolinas Conference.
