  • Friday, April 1, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 7 Behind The Scene By Don Lucas, Sports Editor Well, folks, he's done it again. Yes, Henry Logan has captured another honor to add to his fast-growing list. This one, the first team, NAIA All-American, is probably his most cherished honor and should remain with him throughout his career. Logan, the Catamount's 6-0 jumping-jack, had already taken All-Conference, All-District, All-State, and Conference player of the year honors, in addition to the All-American recognition. He had a 29 point scoring average through the 1966 season, and set a new Carolinas Conference record with 272 assists. The first team was made up of the ten best NAIA basketball players, and Logan represented the only sophomore to land a first team position. Three juniors and six seniors round out the team which would be a coaches dream in any association. Here's how the other selections went: AL TUCKER — Oklahoma Baptist KEN WILBURN — Central Ohio State PAT CALDWELL — Rockhurst (Mo.) JIMMY ROSE — Georgia Southern GARY LIBERATORE — New Haven (Conn.) GENE SUMMERS — Northern Michigan EARL BEECHUM — Midwestern (Tex.) CURT GAMMELL — Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) JIM SCHULER — Carson-Newman Of the ten first team members, only three were guards. Nine of the ten played in the NAIA tournament in Kansas City. Yes, Henry Logan was the only one not present at the Kansas City tournament. ***** Baseball is clearly on the way up here at Western. Last year the Catamounts finished with a 19-9 record, but this year they appear much stronger. Through the first eight games the Cats are 6-2 overall, while posting a 5-1 mark in the conference. Balanced hitting, steady pitching, and expert base- running have been keys to success in the games to pass. Danny Jones, Bob Newton, Bob Maska, Joe Fraser, and Jerry Hicks have carried the big bats thus far, aut many others have jumped in with key hits and helped break open a tight ballgame. Pitching has been superb. Rod Rogers, Roddey Edwards, Jim Bullins, Glenn Ivie, and Tim Newsome have held up the pitching so far, and their performances leave you pleased with what you see. KA, TKE, Day Students And Madison Score Wins The first round of Men's Intramural Softball action is now underway, with four games being played before presstime. All three teams from Buchanan Hall met defeat in the first round, as did the Dillard House. Kappa Alpha and the Day Students' first team emerged as the early contenders for the title, displaying some excellent softball. In the first game, Madison edged 2nd Buchanan, 10-7. Cats Invade A-B In First Tennis Match Tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. the Western Carolina College Tennis team officially opens its 1966 season playing Asheville Biltmore College in Asheville. The Catamount net- ters are led by Dick Kuszyk, the number one man, backed up by Herb Bolick, Fred Ryder, John Christenson, Bruce Loftin' Randy Lanier, and Nick Kale! The match will consist of six set of singles and three sets of doubles. Western looms as the favorite since Asheville Biltmore lost several lettermen due to graduation. If Western gets the type of play from their fourth, fifth, and sixth men that are in- dictive of them, the tennis team of Western Carolina College could capture the first Carolinas conference tennis championship in Western's history. In the past, the tennis team has received little or no support from the students, but with a contender for the conference title, all the support should be given to help cheer our fine team on to victory. Madison got off to an early lead in the first inning with the help of Mike Campbell's home run, and a six-run fourth inning put the game out of reach. Coker and Young hit round- trippers for the losers. The Day Students had easy going in the second game, holding a 16-2 lead going into the last of the fifth inning. But the boys from 3rd Buchanan broke loose with 7 walks and 7 hits, including Smith's second home run of the game, to score 9 runs and send the contest to the full seven innings. Final score was 17-13. Smith also had two singles, going 4 for 4 and scoring 3 runs to lead all hitters. Mike O'Grady homered for the Day Students. The Greeks got into the act in Tuesday's games, with both Tau Kappa Epsilon and Kappa Alpha scoring victories. 1st Buchanan led TKE 2-1 after four innings, but TKE broke loose for 4 runs in the top of the fifth behind Bob Haywood's homer. Buchanan came right back with 5, but another 4-run outburst in the sixth iced the game for TKE. Final score in the closest game of the first two days of action was 9-7, with the losers being outhit by 14-12. Kappa Alpha scored in every inning to down the Dillard House in five innings, 16-2. KA socred 4 runs in the first inn ing to take an early lead which proved to be enough for the victory. John Reid's three-run homer in the second was just icing on the cake. Reid also had a double and two singles in four trips to the plate and scored four times to lead KA's attack of 17 hits to 8 for the losers. Scott Dillard had a double and triple for KA, and Tom Zamzow went 2 for 2 for the Dillard House. R I SYLVA, N. C—Phone 586-2816 Friday - Saturday BELK'S DEPT.
