When she is aroused sexually, she feels extreme discomfort in the area of the clitoris, She has some tight skin covering the clitoris which if pushed aack from over it, provides relief from the discomfort. I told her that I have heard of girls having to be circumcised, but she says I'm nuts, Is it possible that she needs the clitoris operated ,on or did 1 just dream that? ANSWER: The clitoris and the penis have similar origins em- bryo'.ogically. With sexual differentiation, each takes on obviously different appearances and function. However,some similarities remain. One of these similarities is that both enlarge with sexual excitement. What you describe sounds like a rather unusual situation in which the enlarging clitoris is getting trapped in some skin folds. You are right when you said that circumcision is performed on women, but this is usually a sexual ritual in some pre-literate societies. Making the suggestion to your girlfriend that she might need to have her clitoris operated on probably creates the same sense of anxiety that would occur if she told you that you might have to have part of your penis hacked away. She should be examined by a gynecologist and if he finds that the clitoris is being trapped, he could alleviate the condition in his office by some very minor surgery which would not involve the clitoris itself, but which would free-up the tight piece of skin. QUESTION; For as long as 1 can remember both of my thumbnails have been wrinkled. They don't hurt and never have. The entire nail is bumpy and it doesn't seem to ever grow away. What causes a nail to wrinkle? Is it due to a vitamin deficiency or lack of calcium? ANSWER: Fingernails provide all sorts of diagnostic signs to a physician, Being semitransparent and lying on a bed with a rich supply of small blood vessels, the fingernail provides a window to the circulatory system. As well, the nail grows continually- through -out life and disturbances in its rate of growth or malformation, can sometimes provide clues as to the general state of health. For instance, crosswise ridges appear in the nail during an acute illness. Such lines gradually move out as the nail grows. The norma! nail has fine longitudinal ridges. They seem to be more accentuated in older people than younger people0 For unknown reasons, in some people these ridges are more obvious and remain so throughout their entire life. This condition is not associated with any illness or nutritional deficiency and most likely is just a variant of normal, QUESTION: Do you believe of the sanitariness of the three bath towels that our dormitory gives the students each week'.' My suitemate uses the towels to clean the floor of the bathroom and she makes them really dirty, 1 use the towels to dry my face and body after taking a shower. Who knows which towels I get after they are washed. Also, the smell of smoking penetrates my towels so that they are hard to use0 This also comes from my suitemate. What can I do'.' ANSWER; You are asking me to do something that I have never been asked to do before, but for the sake of reassuring you I will: I profess my belief in the sanitariness of dormitory bath towels (may 1 be forgiven if I am wrong,) Actually, the problem here is one of esthetics rather than public health. Commercial laundry equipment, through which towels and linens' from dormitories and other large institutions pass, wash these things at such high temperatures, with such extremely strong detergents that the product is virtually sterilized by the time it comes out. If one gets too wound up with what the towel wiped before it was washed, something akin to virtual paralysis would result. The smell of smoke in the bath towels does sound annoying and unpleasant. You might solve the problem by simply keeping the towel you are using in an inconspicuous place in your own room. THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY MAY 9, 1974 PAGF 5 <% iiiiiiniiiifiiiiiiiifniiii^ A prospective student of commercial jazz with polished classical training and show-band ability, F.umir Deodato is an interesting addition to the music world. Three albums are already behind him, and a relentless devotion to his work should pave the way for a fourth release soon, Deodato's second effort, entitled "Deodato 2" is diverse from the "showy" elements that cloaked his first album and not altogether as progressive as his live L, P, It reflects Deodato's middle=ground, and is influenced by both of these musical interests, A fervent keyboard artist, Deodato employs on this instrumental recording bass, drums8 percussion and congas, guitar, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, french horn, baritone sax, flute, violinj viola, cello and arco bass, all of which are powered by forty-twoprofessional musicians. The arrangements on the disc are structured and conducted by Deodato, who in production is assisted only by studio technicians. The album opens with a traditional masterpiece of Justin Haywood (Moody Blues), "Nights In White Satin", The arranging of this work is decent, but dominated by obnoxious guitar leads analogous to Santana's sound on "Carlos Santana-Buddy Miles", a record unfortunately- obscured by the continual throbbing of WA-WA pedals and fuzz tones. Despite this hinderance, the song contains fine gothic-like flute as well as the intricate jazz percussion of Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra), "Pavane for a Dead Princess" is the most interesting musical piece on the record. Deodato conveys its gentle message with a brilliant performance on the keyboards, and adds a smoothness to the predominantly melancholic mood. "Skyscrapers", one of the two original songs on the album, is a bosa-nova rhythm piece heavily affected by the I-atin influence. This songfeatures the horn section, guitars and an electronic instrument which I suspect is a Moog, The recording is tight and possesses more of a commercial air rather than the unrestricted jazz Deodato is capable of performing, Side two begins with a superb Latin boogie called "Super Strut", a nine minute jam featuring guitars, a variety of percussion and Deodato's grinding organ. Highlighting the album, and the last of its songs, is an old George Gershwin favorite, "Rhapsody in Blue", Deodato's arrangement has been well received, and understandably so. Taking Gershwin's familiar melody, Deodato alters the composition into a soul-shuffle lead by jazz organ, with Gershwin's sound intermittently placed in the framework. The cleverness of this song lies in its arrangement, and how it accomplishes the various transitions from Deodato to Gershwin and vice versa. It represents Deodato's creativity in arranging, which is his most admired talent, "Deodato 2" is not an outstanding album, but contains some truly innovative and flawless creations of a young composer and arranger. Though related to the sound of rock-machinery this recording is pleasantly different, and decidedly more complex. Sometimes it is better no', even to cry to cope with Cullowhee, (Photo by Bill Mclntyre) Summer travel abroad More problems seen for America this year (CPS)— Economic inflation, the energy crisis, terrorism, and stricter customs searches have all made traveling abroad much less of a trip than it was two to three years ago. Nevertheless, there are ways to make travel this summer as enjoyable, inexpensive and hassle-free as possible. GETTING OFF International youth fares were discontinued Jan. 1; do= mestic youth rates are scheduled to be axed June 1. Yet by traveling to Canada and flying Air Canada's youth fare, American students aged 12 to 23 can save from $200 to $300 on a round-trip ticket to Europe. The "off-season" youth rate from Montreal to London is $256 round-trip; the rate during June, July and Au gust is S293, Equivalent regular economy fares from Montreal are $458 and $624 respectively. Youth fare from Vancouver is S413. Air Canada warns that con- ■ firmed youth fare reservations can only be made if seats are available within seven days before flight time. Other carriers offering youth fares out of Canada include Lufthansa, BOAC and C.P, Air. In contrast, last year's $225 ticket from New York to Paris will cost from $350 to $600 this summer. If traveling to Canada is not economically feasible, Icelandic Airlines still offers the lowest transatlantic fares of scheduled carriers serving New York and Chicago. Its 22-45 day ercursion fare from N.Y. is S365 during the summer and $280 during the off season. Those who want to stay a- broad more than 45 days face a regular Icelandic fare of $544. To save additional dollars on this fare, you should avoid flying weekends when there is a surcharge. Other low-cost carriers include airlines like the Russian Aeroflot, which don't belong to the Intenational Air Transport Association (IATA), the price-fixing body for foreign flights. If you're considering enrolling in an organized foreign study program you can often beat the high jet costs if a charter flight is included as part of the package. In addition, study program sponsors can acquire advance accomodations at rates lower that an individual could negotiate, lo offset the convenience is less freedom and a $1,000 to $1,500 price tag for the typical six- week program. One of the less orthodox ways to get there is bv flyine Free- landia, the first non-profit member-operated air travel club. For an initial $25 membership fee Freelandians can fly at round-trip rates like $125 from Los Angeles to Maz- atlan, Mexico, or $160 from Los Angeles to Newark. Since Freelandia only owns one plane, the schedule is irregular, and every three months members vote on where they'd like the plane to go.
