  • Page 8 The Western Carolinian Friday, March 26, 1965 National Service Frat Is Organized Here Recently A chapter of the national Boy Scout fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, was formed at Western Carolina College during Winter quarter, 1964-65. Composed of former Boy Scouts and Explorers, the organization is dedicated primarily to service. Te purpose of Western Carolina's only service fraternity, as prescribed in its constitution, is stated that, ". . . Alpha WCC and its student body. The fraternity's main objective, that of campus service, will offer a permanent means of accomplishing the many organizational drives and service projects undertaken yearly on our campus. It also offers an opportunity for both Greek and non-Greek men to pool their efforts toward a common goal of service." The officers, in addition to Local chapter of national service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. Phi Omega is to assemble college men in the fellowship of the Scout Oath and Law, to develop leadership, to promote friendship, to provide service to humanity, and to further the freedom that Is our national, educational, and intellectual heritage." In an interview with Paul Cabe, organizational president of the service fraternity, he said, "I feel that Alpha Phi Omega offers a program of service which will prove beneficial to Nixon Is Keynote Speaker At Young Republican Rally Former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon will deliver the keynote address of the Young Republican College Council to be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on May 7, 8, and 9, 1965, at the Hotel Robert E. Lee. Nixon will deliver the address on Saturday, May 8, at the Keynote Banquet, which will begin at 11:30 ajn. in the ballroom of the hotel. More than 400 convention delegates, Republican leaders and guests are expected to attend. In addition to Nixon's address the convention program will Include a Congressional Testimonial Dinner honoring all North Carolina Republican Congressional candidate running In the 1964 elections. The dinner will be held In the hotel's main dining room at 6:30 p.m. on May 7 and will be followed by a seminar on "The Future of the Republican Party." Four panelists, Including Dr. Roy D. Morey, assistant to Congressman Griffin of Michigan, and Mr. David Flaherty, candidate for chairman of the Young Republican National Federation, will participate. The second seminar will be held on Saturday, May 8, at 9:00 &sn. on the subject of "American Foreign Policy in Asia." Dr. G. B. Gokhale, Chairman of the South East Area Conference of the Asian Studies Association, will lead three other panelists in an academic survey of American policy in South Viet Nam and other Asian trouble spots. After the Keynote Banquet and the regular convention business session, the convention will be concluded by a combo party. Cabe, include Alan Withrow, Larry Burch, and William Stone, first, second, and third vice- presidents respectively; Bud Garrison, treasurer; David Campbell, corresponding secretary; Robert Black, recording secretary. Other officers are Terry Baldwin, Eric Nixon, Mike Owens, and Bob fcruckner. The group's sponsor Is Dr. Quinn Constantz. Members are Henry Hite, Bab Frickhoffer, Tommy Halgrim, Jimmy Almon, Denny Davis, Bill Haney, John Henzy, J. D. Clark, Jr., Wayne Carver, Tony McCall, Gene Vinson, Mickey Lowder, Billy Durham, Ken Jones, Gerald Edlin, Donald Ward, Mike Ross, Mark Garland, Bob Crumpler, Bill Sykes, Almon Carr, Ronald Owens, Howard Burch, Dave Brown, Dan McGlamery, Earl Hartman, Lee Ledbetter, Tom Humphries, Charles Hicks, Jerry Swanson, Len Suggs, David Hipps, and Tom Pittman. Alaska is 480 times larger than Rhode Island. 'Gypsy' Cast Completed Upchurch Is Named Editor By Democrats The announcement of Bill Upchurch as Editor of the statewide Young Democrats Newspaper, "The College Democrat", was disclosed last week by State Y.D.C. headquarters in Raleigh. Announcement of the appointment came from Walter R. Turner, Chairman of the College Federation of Democrats. Concerning the appointment, Mr. Turner had this to say: "I am delighted that Bill Upchurch has accepted the position of Editor of the 'College Democrat.' Bill has already demonstrated his ability by his work for the 'Western Carolinian' and by his active interest and participation in the Y.D.C. This paper represents a long-time goal of the College Federation and I am confident that it will prove a great success in the coming months." Upchurch i* a rising Junior at Western Carolina College and is President of the Debate Club and a member of the Western Carolinian Staff. The new editor Is a history major and very active In Y.D.C, In which he serves as a member of the Constitutional Committee. In regard to his appointment Upchurch stated: "I am highly honored that I have been chosen as Editor of the "College Democrat". This paper has great potential, I feel sure the staff of this paper will develop to the fullest. I realize that much time and effort will be necessary for the job, but I am certain it will be a great experience for the entire staff. Oher local students were appointed to the staff by Upchurch early this week. Dave Walker, another active member of the Y.D.C. will serve as News Editor, Richmond Covington at Business Manager, Dan McGlammery as Circulation manager and Charles Stephens as Feature editor. Religious Emphasis Week Set To Begin Here Sunday Night The annual Religious Emphasis Week will be held on campus from Sunday, March 28 through Wednesday, March 31 under the joint sponsorship of the religious groups at Western Carolina College. Guest speakers are Reverend John Barry, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church In Sylva, and Reverend C. Roland Gerhold, a Lutheran minister and Chaplain for the deaf at North Jersey Training School. Rev. Gerhold Is from Newark, New Jersey. Evening worship services will be held March 28 through March 30 in the Gallery of Hunter Library at 7:00 p.m. Both speakers have classroom appointments during the day. On Monday, March 28, Rev. Gerhold will be In Mc- Kee-121 at 8:00 a.m. and In Stillwell-310at2:00 p.m. Father Barry will be 118 McKee at 8:00 a.m. and at 3:00 p.m. On Tuesday, Rev. Gerhold will be In Stiilwell-310 at 11:00 a.m., and In Stillwell 211 at 7:00 p.m. Various churches in the area will als#be participating in the services, and evening discussion groups will be held in the dormitories. Both visiting ministers have records of long and distinguished service to their respective churches. Reverend Barry attended St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Chicago and Glen- mary Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since his ordination to the Catholic Priesthood in 1957, he has been active in church and youth activities both in Sylva and Sylvania, Georgia. Reverend Gerhold received his education at Concordia Collegiate Institute in Bronxville, New York, and at Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis. He founded a Lutheran Church in Chappaqua, New York, and has done extensive work with the deaf, which includes his acting in an advisory capacity to several organizations related to work with the deaf. 48 Roles Filled For LTC's Spring Musical Production Dennis McKevlin and Betty Cooper, standing, and Sue Warren, seated, have been chosen for the leading roles in the Little Theatre's spring production of Gypsy. The play will open May 4 for a five night run. Casting has been completed for the Little Theatre at Cullowhee's production of the Jules Styne musical GYPSY. The play, wich is already in rehearsal for a May 4th opening, is based on the memoirs of famed burlesque queen, Gypsy Rose Lee. From a cast of 48 characters, the lead roles of Rose, Gypsy, and Herbie have gone to Betty Cooper, Sue Warren and Mr. Dennis McKelvIn, respectively. Rose Is a typical, domineering stage-mother who pushes her awkward and shy daughter, Louise, onto the stage and turns her Into a world famous stripper. Herbie Is Rose's press agent who is really In love with Rose but cannot talk her out of the theater and Into marriage. Betty Cooper is a freshman from Burnisville, N. C. She is a Dramatic Arts major and played Grace in BUS STOP and Flora in 27 WAGONS OF COTTON. Sue Warren, who is playing Gypsy, is a transfer student from Winthrop College. At Winthrop, she played Amanda in GLASS MENAGERIE, Andromache in TROJAN WOMEN, and Princess Berta in ONDINE. Sue gave a very talented performance on the LTC stage in the one-act play, THE TWELVE POUND LOOK. McKelvin is an English Professor at W.C.C. His performance as Herbie will be his stage debut. The role of June, Rose's "talented" daughter, was captured by Karen Lee Schmitz who played Cherie in the Little Theater's Fall quarter production of BUS STOP. Karen is a freshman from Graham, N. C. The three strippers will be Candy Keener as Electra, Gail Whitlock as Tes- sie Tura, and Judy Carswell as Mazeppa. Pat Hurley, a native of Canton, N. C, portrays Tulsa, a member of the troupe who elopes with Baby June. The moppets in the production will be played by local youngsters: Gail Mcintosh as Baby Louise, Rebecca Hicks as Baby June Craig Smith as young Tulsa, Dave Hicks as young Yonkers, Dave Wittikind as young Angie, and Vincent Clark as young L. A. The plot of GYPSY centers mainly around Rose, a determined stage mother who is determined that her daughters become vaudeville stars. They do become stars, June Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee, but not in vaudeville. The musical opened on Broadway on May 21st, 1959 with Ethel Merman in the star role, and ran successfully for two years. The 1962 film version starred Rosalind Russell as Rose and Natalie Wood as Louise. The local production of GYPSY is being staged by Thad Roberts. Roberts has worked several years with the Little Theatre both as actor and director. He appeared in productions of TARTUFFE and ROPE and recently directed Tennessee Williams* one-acter, 27 WAGONS OF COTTON. Roberts, a Junior from Asheville, N. C, is majoring in English and Dramatic Arts. Fern Ferris is serving as musical director and Bob Koontz. is production stage manager. Others in the cast are Gary Carden, Jim Hubbard, Barney McMahan, Kathy Pennington, Lavenia Sparks, Nelda Hardin, Sheryl Burton, Sandy Woodfin, Pat Hurley, Bob Koontz, Tom Morgan, Tommy Pittman, Anthony Brown, Bill Helton, Margaret Hilton, Karen Blackmore, Sandy Norris, Lavonne Cannon, Buni Rogers, Judy Murray, and Becky Walker. Jim Bass, Fred Hardin, Beverly Brackett, Kay Collins, Linda Hardy, Bill Shawn Smith, John Keeler, Kitti Spenser, and Mike Smith.
