  • Page 6 The Western Carolinian Friday, January 15, 1965 SPORTS SECTION From The Sidelines By John Reid Sports Editor Now that the basketball season is nearing the halfway mark, the race for the Carolinas Conference crown is beginning to take a definite shape. High Point's Panthers appear to be far out in front of everyone else. As of press time, Coach Tom Quinn's team had compiled a 6-0 conference mark, was undefeated in 13 games, and was ranked fourth nationally in the NAIA poll. With four seniors providing the core of the team, including guards Barry Smith and Joe Forte, forward Kirk Stewart, and center Dale Neel, the Panthers have an advantage over every other league team in experience. Appalachian, Lenoir Rhyne, Western Carolina, and Guilford are closest to High Point in the race thus far. Guilford forced High Point to go into overtime before losing earlier this season, and has proved to be a stronger team than most observers predicted the Quakers would be before the season began. The other three of these teams have been beating each other for years, and 1965 is no exception. Lenoir Rhyne beat Western at Hickory, Appalachian defeated the Bears at Boone, and Western played Appalachian last night in Cullowhee. Pfeiffer, Atlantic Christian, and Elon compose the third echelon of the conference standings at the moment. Elon has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far. The Christians were expected to be a top contender this season, but have not broken even in five conference games. Catawba and Newberry are this year's doormats, although the Indians from Salisbury have shown instances of sparkling play. The Carolinas Conference has once again proved itself to be one of the strongest small-college leagues in the country. High Point is nationally ranked, and overall the 10 teams have compiled a record of 37 wins and 24 losses against non-conference competition. Cats Smash Christians New School Scoring Record Established In 120-91 Victory Intramurals For Men Continue Activity in men's intramural sports continued last week as eight teams met in competition on Thursday night, January 7, 1965. Two contests were played at 7:00 and two others at 7:30. In a 7:00 game 3rd and 4th Madison unleased an unlimited display of power as they steam - rolled the Dillard House. The Madison team utilized every minute of the 15- minute halves and rolled up a crushing score of 53-6. The Dillard House was never in contention. Bill Lowe accounted for 16 of Madison's points. In the other 7:00 contest 1st and 2nd Reynolds North breezed past Delta Sigma Phi. Reynolds played steadily and won by a 16 point margin, 26-10. Kappa Alpha gave the freshmen of 3rd Buchanan their first taste of WCC volleyball. K. A. downed the frosh by a commanding score of 29-6. Buchanan had won its first contest by a forfeit and not played. The game was played at 7:30. The final contest of the night pitted the Faculty against 1st and 2nd Reynolds South. The Faculty showed no mercy on Reynolds as they defeated the students, 35-9. Kappa Alpha defeated the Faculty Monday night 20-7 to take the National League title. All persons interested in bowling competitively should sign up in Office 18 at Reid Gym. Competition is open to all male students. Games will be bowled at Reid. Office 18 is also the place to sign up for intramural handball. All men interested should sign up before January 22, 1965. The Western Carolina Catamounts set a school scoring record in their 36th consecutive home victory by beating Atlantic Christian College 120-91 before a capacity crowd of 3,500 fans in a Carolina's Conference game. The Christians took an early lead, but with 13:45 left in the first half the Cats retaliated with a score of 20-14. From this point on, there was no stopping the accurate shooting and fast-breaking displayed by the Cats. The Christians zone defense was in vain. The Cats left the floor with a score of 69-45 ending the first half. In the second half the Cats scored 51 points breaking the previous school record of 116 in 1964 against Newberry. Dale Beaver, a 6-7 Freshman from Rockwell, N. C. scored the record breaking basket. The Christians by scoring 91 points held on to their 90 points per game average, but fell apart in holding their 92 points per game defense average. The victory gave Western an 8-5 overall record and a 3-1 record in the Conference. Western had a 59.1 shooting average from the floor while Atlantic Christian had a 34.8. Five Catamount players scored in double figures, led by Henry Logan with 31 points and followed by Charley McConnell with 27 and J. B. Kaiser with 25. Jack Gilbert broke into the starting line-up and contributed 11 points, while reserve center John Bloom scored 10. There were 53 fouls committed in the game: 27 by Western and 26 by Atlantic Christian. Jones, Tice, and Hobbs fouled out for Christians, while Kaiser was the only player for Western. The Bulldogs hit 26-37 free-throws, while the Cats hit 26-39. Even though the scoring was one sided, the game was very exciting. The fans marveled at the antics and spectacular scoring attempts by Henry Logan and the blistering scoring by McConnell and Kaiser. Perhaps the most entertaining part of the game came in the last few minutes as Logan dribbled through his legs and behind his back and eluded the Christian defensive efforts time after time.
