  • Friday, February 11, 1966 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE 7 Catamounts Rip High Point With Second Half Surge Western Carolina employed a red-hot offense, an air-tight zone defense, and a never-ending desire to win Wednesday night as they ripped High Point, 97-70. The victory was sweet revenge for last season's defeat suffered at the hands of the Panthers which broke the Catamount's 40 game winning string at home. An earlier defeat this season by the High Point five also lived in the minds of the Cats as they defeated the visitors. Henry Logan led the Catamount scoring with 34 points, followed by Charlie McConnell's 23 and Bob Thompson's 14. The game was lopsided from the second half on, much to the surprise of the screaming fans. High Point, the number one team in the Carolinas Conference, suffered only their second conference loss. Western jumped Into a quick lead with McConnell leading the way and with 7:34 left in the half held their biggest lead of the half at 26-17. High Point battled back to within four with 3:39 remaining in the half, but clutch free throws by McConnell and John Brintnall and a three-point play by Thompson pulled the Cats ahead again by nine, 33-24. Failing to give up, however, the Panthers' Mike Lindsay fired in two long jump shots in the last 80 seconds to close the half at 33-28. In the final half, Logan took over. The 6-0 sophomore from Asheville poured in 26 points in this period and contributed to the onslaught with several key assists. With 18:35 left in the game Western led only 35-30, but Logan, McConnell, and Thomp son poured on the coals and the Cats broke loose. A poor shooting performance by Panther star Gene Littles was obvious to the packed house at Reid gym, but the Catamounts hustling zone defense has to be given some credit for the bad night. Lindsay and Jim Picka were the big guns for High Point with 18 and 17 points respectively. The visitors could muster only a 34 per cent shooting percentage for the night as compared to a sparkling 50 per cent performance for the Catamounts. From the free throw line Western nipped the visitors 27-26, but High Point had 38 chances to 34 for the Cats. In the rebounding department Charlie McConnell led the way grabbing 10 as the Catamounts topped the Panthers here, 50- 36. This in itself was a very important factor in the victory. Wittman, a 6-8, former Roch- ingham High School star, fired in 20 and 23 points in the two crucial contests this week to become a major factor for the two victories. Greg's fine showing brings smiles to the faces of all Catamount rooter when they think of the remaining games to be played this season and the three seasons to follow which he will certainly have a hand in. Although his scoring has only ranged around the nine-point mark this season, perhaps his greatest asset has been his rebounding ability. In this department he is well over the ten me mark. For the second straight game the Western Carolina College Catamounts used a balanced scoring attack to down opponents. Last Saturday night in Reid gym a near-capacity crowd watched the red-hot Cats burn the Elon College five, 106-92. Henry Logan was the big gun for Western, but he received ample support from Greg Wittman and Charlie McConnell. His 35 points shared game honors with Henry Goedeck, while Wittman tossed in a season high of 23 and McConnell aided the Cats' cause with 22. Western jumped into a big lead from the start and built on to it to take a 57-36 advantage into intermission. In the final half foul trouble hit the Cats and John Brintnall, Bob Thompson, and John Bloom were forced to leave the game with five personals. Elon took full advan- ma oi sassoj Xjueqa am jo a3ej the Catamount lead, but Jack Gilbert and Logan put together late clutch baskets to keep the game under Catamount control. Logan and forces cut the cords at a 56 per cent accuracy to overshadow the tremendous advantage at the free throw line enjoyed by Elon. The Cats, however, led the free throw percentage also, hitting 14 of 16 shots as compared to 24 of 32 by the visitors.
